Siem Offshore has contracted Vard Electro to deliver a battery package for retrofitting to a subsea construction vessel.
Vard’s SeaQ energy storage system, with two battery packs and a DC link, will be installed early next year on the vessel, which is being lined up for work in the offshore wind sector.
The system will allow the vessel to operate in fully electric mode with zero emissions while maneuvering in harbor or other restricted areas, with estimated fuel savings of up to 20%.
It is designed to store excess energy, either generated by the vessel or taken via shore connections with renewable power sources, in place of engines running on fossil-based fuels to drive propulsion and thruster systems.
In this case, battery storage will be used as a spinning reserve in place of generator sets, allowing the vessel to run on fewer engines with a more optimal load while still maintaining the requirement for redundancy.
Vard will also supply and integrate a DC grid for power distribution to consumers, with control and monitoring of the battery storage system managed by the SeaQ Energy Management System which will interact with existing control systems onboard.
