When people think of the Caribbean, they picture beautiful beaches, blue water and swaying palm trees.

𝐁𝐮𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐦𝐞𝐭 𝐆𝐮𝐲𝐚𝐧𝐚?

A Caribbean country on the South American mainland, where Kaieteur Falls thunders through the rainforest, mighty rivers stretch beyond the horizon, and cowboys still ride across the Rupununi savannah.

𝐘𝐞𝐬, 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐡𝐚𝐬 𝐜𝐨𝐰𝐛𝐨𝐲𝐬! 🐎

And that's just the beginning.

Guyana is home to jaguars, giant water lilies and more than 820 species of birds. Its Indigenous peoples carry forward rich cultures, traditions and knowledge that continue to shape the country today.

𝐓𝐡𝐢𝐬, 𝐭𝐨𝐨, 𝐢𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐧.

And that's what makes our region so extraordinary. Every destination has its own character, its own people and its own stories worth discovering.

Across the Caribbean, many of us grew up with food just outside the door — mango, breadfruit, avocado, plantain, seasoning, herbs and ground provisions.

It was normal. It was part of home.

Yet 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐧𝐝𝐬 𝐦𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐧 𝐔𝐒$𝟔 𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲 𝐲𝐞𝐚𝐫 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐨𝐝.

So, the question is simple:

𝐈𝐟 𝐬𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐠𝐫𝐨𝐰 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞, 𝐰𝐡𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐰𝐞 𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐬𝐨 𝐦𝐮𝐜𝐡 𝐨𝐟 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐰𝐞 𝐞𝐚𝐭?

Part of the answer may be how we see agriculture — and whether young people see a future in it.

Because agriculture today can mean technology, research, climate-smart farming, entrepreneurship and new markets.

But some of the answer may also be right in front of us.

Maybe sustainability is not always about something new.

𝐌𝐨𝐤𝐨 𝐉𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐢𝐞. 𝐌𝐚𝐮𝐛𝐲. 𝐂𝐮𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐞. 𝐑𝐡𝐮𝐦𝐛𝐚.

You know the names.

But perhaps you’ve never imagined them like this.

For 40 years, Trinidad & Tobago designer 𝐑𝐨𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠, 𝐅𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐨𝐟 The Cloth , has drawn on the Caribbean around him — Carnival, colour, people, places and everyday life — to create fashion with a language of its own.

Now that journey has taken The Cloth 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐦𝐨𝐧𝐭, 𝐏𝐨𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐒𝐩𝐚𝐢𝐧, 𝐭𝐨 𝐇𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐬 in London, as part of the current showcase.

And that matters.

For generations, the Caribbean has sent extraordinary things into the world — our sugar, cocoa, coffee and cotton; our music, our culture.

There is something powerful about seeing 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞 𝐧𝐨𝐭 𝐬𝐢𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐢𝐧𝐬𝐩𝐢𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐨𝐫 𝐫𝐚𝐰 𝐦𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐟𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐬𝐡𝐞𝐝 𝐢𝐝𝐞𝐚 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐫𝐲𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐂𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐛𝐛𝐞𝐚𝐧 𝐧𝐚𝐦𝐞.

Even the fabric tells part of the story. The Cloth works with West Indian Sea Island Cotton, one of the world’s rarest and most prized cottons, grown exclusively in the Caribbean.

And still, you can see home in the clothes. It feels familiar.

Just not in the way you expected.

Before the next line lands, there it is — that unmistakable laugh. Mischievous. Cheeky. Pure Sparrow.

And then the kaiso begins.

Born in Grand Roy, Grenada, and raised in Trinidad from infancy, Slinger Francisco emerged in the 1950s as a force that would help reshape calypso.

But Sparrow's impact went far beyond crowns and Road March victories.

For decades, he turned Caribbean life into song — politics, love, money, Carnival, race, bacchanal, the characters around us and whatever everybody happened to be talking about.

He made us laugh. He made us think. And sometimes, he made us laugh at ourselves.

𝐇𝐞 𝐝𝐢𝐝𝐧'𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐞𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧 𝐮𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐨𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐯𝐞𝐬.
𝐇𝐞 𝐤𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐮𝐬.

Across the Caribbean, his songs became part of our collective memory. Beyond it, Sparrow proved something equally powerful: a distinctly Caribbean voice did not have to become less Caribbean to travel.

But here's where the story gets even more fascinating.

Scientists exploring Bonaire's deeper waters have encountered marine life previously unknown to science. A deep-reef expedition recorded 𝐚𝐭 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐬𝐭 𝟏𝟓 𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬, including fish, shrimp and sponges.

And one discovery happened almost by accident.

During a night dive, underwater photographer 𝐄𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐧 𝐌𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐞𝐫 photographed a lobster. When she later examined the image, she noticed a tiny, unfamiliar creature hiding in the background.

It turned out to be 𝐚 𝐧𝐞𝐰 𝐬𝐩𝐞𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐭 𝐜𝐫𝐚𝐛.

Nearly half a century after Bonaire began protecting its underwater world, we're still discovering what lives there.

Here’s Harry Belafonte and Danny Kaye having an absolute time performing 𝑀𝑎𝑚𝑎 𝐿𝑜𝑜𝑘 𝑎 𝐵𝑜𝑜 𝐵𝑜𝑜 on American television in the 1960s.

But there’s another Caribbean story behind the song.

Mama Look a Boo Boo was originally recorded in the 1950s by 𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐢𝐝𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐜𝐚𝐥𝐲𝐩𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐚𝐧 𝐋𝐨𝐫𝐝 𝐌𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐝𝐲 — 𝐅𝐢𝐭𝐳𝐫𝐨𝐲 𝐀𝐥𝐞𝐱𝐚𝐧𝐝𝐞𝐫. The wonderfully self-deprecating song pokes fun at Melody’s looks — the kind of wit and teasing deeply associated with the calypso tradition of picong.

Harry Belafonte later recorded his version, and the song became an American hit — 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐍𝐨. 𝟏𝟏 𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔.𝐒. 𝐩𝐨𝐩 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐢𝐧 𝟏𝟗𝟓𝟕.

Belafonte’s own story was deeply Caribbean. Born in New York to a Jamaican mother and a Martinican father, he spent part of his childhood in Jamaica. His landmark 1956 album 𝐶𝑎𝑙𝑦𝑝𝑠𝑜 would help introduce Caribbean music to an enormous international audience.

And here he is with 𝐃𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐲 𝐊𝐚𝐲𝐞, 𝐨𝐧𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐀𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚’𝐬 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐞𝐫𝐚, singing a song that began with a Trinidadian calypsonian.

There was a time when nobody called it wellness.

Food came from the yard, the market, the sea — sometimes from a neighbour. We spent more time outdoors, visited each other more often, sat around talking, laughing, sharing food and simply enjoying each other’s company.

𝐈𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬𝐧'𝐭 𝐚 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐞𝐜𝐭 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐧𝐨 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐝 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐢𝐭 𝐰𝐚𝐬.

But there was something about that way of living that many of us still miss.

Today, people travel thousands of miles searching for experiences that promise better food, more time in nature, deeper human connection and a chance to slow down.

Perhaps one of the Caribbean's greatest treasures isn't something we need to invent.

Perhaps it is something we need to remember.

𝐖𝐇𝐀𝐓 𝐂𝐀𝐍 𝐇𝐀𝐏𝐏𝐄𝐍 𝐖𝐇𝐄𝐍 𝐀 𝐘𝐎𝐔𝐍𝐆 𝐏𝐄𝐑𝐒𝐎𝐍 𝐈𝐒 𝐆𝐈𝐕𝐄𝐍 𝐓𝐇𝐄 𝐎𝐏𝐏𝐎𝐑𝐓𝐔𝐍𝐈𝐓𝐘 𝐓𝐎 𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐈𝐏𝐀𝐓𝐄? 🇧🇿

At just 11 years old, The Real Manatee Man saw scientists preparing to head out to conduct manatee health assessments in his home village in Belize.

He asked if he could join them. They gave him the opportunity.

Jamal continued volunteering and learning, eventually turning that early involvement into a career dedicated to protecting Belize’s endangered Antillean manatees and the habitats on which they depend.

Today, his work includes research, monitoring, rescue, education, community outreach and advocacy. He has also taken Belize’s conservation experience onto international platforms as a 𝐍𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥 𝐆𝐞𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐢𝐜 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐥𝐨𝐫𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐅𝐮𝐧𝐝 𝐅𝐞𝐥𝐥𝐨𝐰.

And now he is working to develop the 𝐁𝐞𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐞 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐬𝐜𝐮𝐞 & 𝐄𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐂𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫, with the aim of rescuing and rehabilitating marine wildlife while helping another generation of young people learn about conservation.

There is a bigger Caribbean story here.

Jamal’s story is about much more than manatees.

It shows what conservation can become when communities are not simply consulted, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐠𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐫𝐧, 𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐥𝐞𝐚𝐝.

That distinction matters.

Too often, community involvement begins and ends with being invited into a room, asked for an opinion and then sent home. Real participation goes further. It gives people knowledge, responsibility, experience and a genuine role in shaping what happens in the places where they live.
