養殖漁業是早期台灣人民賴以維生的主要經濟來源。由於早期魚苗數量有限以及魚苗成本價位較高，讓魚苗數量的準確度成為交易中的關鍵要素。為了確保交易數量的公平性，漁民使用白色碗型的器具撈起魚苗，一尾一尾計算，讓買賣雙方確認魚苗總數。

因此，在交易行為中形成一種似唸似唱的口傳文化－數魚栽，並透過個人獨特的聲音及調性，建立魚苗交易中的信任，更增添趣味。
