【談文論譯】Number 10 首相府, Whitehall 英國政府, The City 英國金融界 蘇正隆
📍 #英國媒體 常出現某些台灣讀者較不熟悉的用語，諸如：Number 10, Whitehall, The City 等。
📍 10，指英國首相府。飽受爭議的 #英國首相江森 (Boris Johnson)，自己和親信醜聞不斷，之前堅不辭職，近日眾叛親離，四面楚歌，7月7日終於宣布辭去保守黨 (Tory) 黨魁，等推出新首相就會離職。英國媒體在提到英國首相辦公室時往往以 10 Downing Street 代稱，唐寧街10號是英國首相官邸、辦公的地方，位於倫敦西敏市，簡稱 Number 10。譬如7月初江森身邊官員相繼辭職逼宮，BBC Newscast 的標題就是 What is going on in Number 10 right now?
10 Downing Street in London, also known colloquially in the United Kingdom as Number 10, is the official residence and executive office of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Along with the adjoining Cabinet Office at 70 Whitehall, it is the headquarters of the Government of the United Kingdom.
Situated in Downing Street in the City of Westminster, London, Number 10 is over 300 years old and contains approximately 100 rooms. A private residence for the prime minister's use occupies the third floor. The other floors contain offices and conference, reception, sitting and dining rooms where the prime minister works, and where government ministers, national leaders and foreign dignitaries are met and hosted.
📍 ，白廳 (街)，大寫指英國內閣行政中心，類似我們的行政院，常用來指「英國政府」，就像「美國總統府」表示，媒體常會說「白宮表示」。Whitehall, to the street located on the site on which many of the current administrative buildings of the present-day British government are situated, and hence metonymically (借喻/轉喻為) to the central government itself. 見以下兩個例子：
★ According to the Whitehall Study, why are certain groups at a particular disadvantage? Socioeconomic status is one of the most powerful risk factors for poor health outcomes.
★ According to the Whitehall figures, nearly one million single parents will be worse off.
📍 City，大寫時常用來指「英國金融界/倫敦金融圈」，often used as a metonym (借喻/轉喻) for the United Kingdom's trading and financial services industries. 就如同以「華爾街」來喻指「美國金融市場」。見以下例子：
★ The City expects the slump to be severe in response to the lockdown and the mothballing of much of the economy.
