CEO & Founder Jensen Huang's keynote at 2024 was a masterclass in . Anyone hoping to refine their communications skills should study this talk.

Takeaways:

1) Stage Presentation
Donning his signature black leather jacket, Huang commanded the stage with great ease and charisma. He moved freely deliberately. His unhurried style made the audience feel safe and that all they hade to do to listen to him.

2) Humor
Huang skillfully used jokes at different points to perk up the flow of the speech. His playfulness stoked warmth and narrowed the gap between him and the audience. He also made fun of his own Chinese and used it to highlight the power of AI when he revealed the Chinese-speaking Jensen on the video was actually "Jensen AI."

3) Tones, pauses and fluctuations
Huang annunciates his words clearly. Even with a slight accent, it is easy to understand Huang when he speaks in Mandarin or Taiwanese. He is also masterful at using various speed to capture attention.

4) Preview, Present, Review
The architecture of a great speech contains three key components - preview, present, review. At the start of his talk, Huang laid out the three topics that he was going to speak on. He spent the bulk of his speech elaborating on each points. To conclude, he summarized up his 2-hour talk by using a few key phrases.

5) Eye-ball grabbing visuals
Even if you watched the speech without the volume, the visual assets were enough to give you a good idea what the talk was about. His use of timeline, videos, graphs, animations, charts really made it easier to grasp a general but accurate understanding of a complex topic.

6) Facts and Figures
The most persuasive element of Huang's talk was his frequent use of numbers to support his arguments and underscore the superiority of his products. For example, 100x speed up but only increase the power by a factor of 3 and the increase of cost is 50%. (27:01-27:13).

7) Catch Phrase
Almost all great speeches have a powerful and memorable catch phrase and for Huang, it was "The more you buy, the more you save."

😎 New News
Nvidia put out 15 press releases the day of Huang’s talk. During his presentation, Huang also added a few other newsy bits including Blackwell Ultra and the Reuben platform. Even though it was pouring rain outside and the talk cuts into Sunday dinner time, he made the audience feel it listening to him was time well-spent.

9) Authentic and Humility
Huang started out his talk by thanking his Taiwanese partners . He showed a slide that features Taiwan in the center surrounded by names of all of Nvidia’s partners in the country. The same slide was shown again at the end of his speech. The ending video was a sincere tribute to all his Taiwanese partners. The whole talk ended on a upbeat and warm note.

Presenting in our native tongue is no easy task. To do it in another language can be even more nerve wrecking. The goal is not to speak fluently but to convey your message in a clear, concise and comfortable manner. While you are not required to have near native-level pronunciation, you do need to pronounce the important keywords accurately. Also, never memorize a speech word-for-word, but be very familiar with the structure of the presentation. When you can make it flow, you can make it glow. And to make it glow, make sure you go slow. The presentation is not to show off your language skill but to highlight your message so no need to use fancy flowery language. Keep your sentences simple and short. Lastly, smile, stand tall and use humor to win empathy from the audience. Once they are your cheerleaders, they will be more receptive to your message.

Most people are visual learners. This means how you present yourself is often more memorable than what you present. To make a positive and long lasting impression, the presenter should provide a visually pleasing experience that commands attention and authority. How you stand, dress, speak, use your hands all affect the audience’s reception of your message and who you are as a leader.

When I was in junior high, our school had the students sell chocolate bars to raise funds. One year, the money was to get new instruments for the school band. I wasn’t in a band so I really didn’t care and only sold a few bars to my parents. But the following year, I really stepped up and sold multiple boxes. What changed? I finally had skin in the game! That year, I made it to the cheerleading squad and part of the money from the chocolate sale that year would pay for our trips to the state cheerleading competition. You bet I went door-to-door and sold as many chocolate bars as I could. I can’t remember how we fared as a school, but I do remember it was very personal to me.

Whether you are a SME or a large corporation, your employees are always your #1 asset. When the employees have a personal stake in the outcome, they take greater ownership of their work as they know they have direct gains, or losses, from their performance. Moreover, giving your employees skin in the game also stokes innovation and increases cohesiveness. The message is, not only are we all on the same boat, we are rowing in sync towards the same direction to the same destination.

The most ubiquitous way of giving your employees skin in the game is by making them part ownership through stock options or shares. If that’s not possible, you can also consider a bonus pool or a commission + salary payout plan. Or other creative options like end-of-the-year company trips, tuition coverage, extra holidays, etc. No matter what you decide, the point is to make your employees feel valued and that their contributions matter. Just remember, people don’t leave bad jobs, they leave bad bosses. After all, people just want to matter to those who matter to them.

Walking into a room of Rotarians felt like coming home to me. My dad, a lifelong Rotarian, always talked about how his band of Rotarian brothers enriched his life. It was doubly exciting for me when .portnoy told me it was his 1st time attending a Rotary meeting. Huge thanks to the Rotary Club of Taipei Evergreen (台北南欣扶輪社) for making us feel so welcomed. Over lunch, we discussed how to cultivate a strong inner core and what it takes to be a compassionate leader. The success of the event was also due to our awesome translator Annie Hsieh. A memorable day indeed.

Later that night Jason and I spoke at The Community Services Center - Taipei , a place of support for expats in Taiwan. Our chat pivoted towards loving oneself and holding space for those in our orbit. When we hold ourselves in the palms of our own hands, we no longer need external validation. When I am ok, then you’ll be OK and we will all be OK.
