山茶花的花語.
山茶花為常綠灌木或喬木，葉互生，濃綠而具光澤，卵形或橢圓形，革質，葉緣有鋸齒。花頂生或腋生，單瓣或重瓣，花色有紅、粉紅、紫紅、桃紅、玫瑰紅、白……等，另有不同顏色的斑塊、條紋、鑲色等繁複變化。果實為蒴果，果大皮厚，但重瓣的品種很少看到結果的，可能是大多雄蕊已花瓣化，故不易授粉。山茶花又有別稱叫「曼陀羅花」。「曼陀羅」是梵語的音譯，為「道場」、「圓輪具足」之意，重瓣品種的山茶花花瓣層層相疊，輪轉不斷，正合此意。
山茶花的日文漢字為椿.因此自稱為椿姬.
