“Why I Still Believe in Positive Power and Influence After 20 Years“
by Sherri Malouf, PhD - Positive Power and Influence® Program
For 20 years, I have represented the Positive Power and Influence® Program in China.
That is long enough to see many management ideas arrive in impressive packaging—and quietly disappear. PPIP has stayed relevant because it solves a problem that never really goes away: how to move things forward through people.
Today, AI can draft our emails, summarize our meetings and make our arguments sound wonderfully polished. Unfortunately, it cannot guarantee that anyone will agree with us. Influence remains a very human business.
After 20 years, three qualities of PPIP still stand out to me.
First, it turns fog into a map.
When an influence attempt fails, people often focus on one awkward sentence or one uncomfortable reaction and conclude that their entire approach was wrong. Sometimes they even wonder whether they should have tried to influence at all.
PPIP makes influence less mysterious. It breaks it down into visible, learnable behaviors and provides a structured way to diagnose the situation and select a strategy. You can see what you did, understand its impact and decide what to do differently.
That is simplicity at its best: not making the subject smaller, but making it clearer.
Second, it defines success in two dimensions.
Did I achieve the result? And what happened to the relationship?
Winning the meeting but losing the colleague is not necessarily a victory. Nor is preserving perfect harmony while nothing gets done.
PPIP asks us to consider both the immediate objective and the longer-term relationship. This resonates strongly with Chinese thinking: today’s transaction matters, but so does whether we can still sit at the same table tomorrow.
Third, it helps good people influence without feeling guilty about it.
Influence is often confused with manipulation, politics or imposing one’s will. As a result, thoughtful people may over-edit themselves: they soften what should be clear, avoid using authority when responsibility requires it, or stay silent to avoid appearing “pushy.”
PPIP separates effectiveness from unnecessary self-judgment. It does not remove ethics from influence. It helps us influence consciously—considering our intention, behavior, impact and respect for the other person.
For me, this is why PPIP has endured.
It helps us see clearly, choose wisely and act with confidence—while keeping both results and relationships in view.
Twenty years later, that still feels like power used positively.
