Can you handle the truth ?

One of America’s leading Investors set up a special fund of $1bn, for investment in African entrepreneurs. After two years he shut it down!
Reason:
Not enough people applied for it. And most of those who did apply did not have the skills necessary to access this type of fund.

I watched him shut it down.

I sat down with him one day, and listened to his frustration, he was so sincere and I did not blame him.

There are a lot of people like him out there.

Raising Capital is a which every entrepreneur must acquire.

Kuna makundi mawili ya Wafanyabiashara;

A. Wafanyabiashara wanaokua.
B. Wafanyabiashara wasiokua.

Kundi A, ni wale wanaofanya biashara kwa MALENGO, wanaipenda biashara yao, na wanataka kufika level fulani kubwa. Biashara ndio Plan A katika maisha yao.

Hawa kundi A, wana DAMU ASILI ya biashara. Tabia yao kubwa ni moja; Hata k**a wakifeli mara nyingi, hua wanarudi, wanaanza upya, na kuendelea na safari zao, hadi watimize MALENGO waliyojiwekea.

KUNDI B, ni wale wanaofanya biashara kwa sababu tu walishindwa, au walikosa nafasi ya kufanya vitu vyao vingine. Biashara haikuwahi kua kichwani mwao.

Walijikuta tu wanalazimika kufanya biashara ili waweze kumudu maisha. Lakini k**a wangepata options nyingine, basi wasingefanya biashara.

Kundi B hawana DAMU YA ASILI YA BIASHARA. Tabia yao kubwa ni moja; Wakipata changamoto/hasara kidogo tu, wanaacha biashara, na wanasimulia kila mtu jinsi gani biashara ni kitu hatari kufanya.

Tofauti za haya makundi mawili utaziona katika matendo yao.

Kwa mfano;

Kundi A wanapenda sana kutumia mikopo kukuza biashara zao. Kundi B wanaogopa, na hawataki kabisa kusikia habari za mikopo.

Kundi A wana uwezo na maarifa ya kufungua matawi ya biashara zao. Kundi B hawana uwezo wala maarifa ya kufungua matawi ya biashara zao.

Kundi A wanatumia masaa mengi kila siku katika biashara zao, na hawachoki. Kundi B wanatumia masaa machache katika biashara zao, na kila siku wanalalamika wamechoka.

Kundi A wanadumu katika biashara ya aina moja kwa miaka mingi. Kundi B wanabadilisha aina za biashara kila mwaka.

Zipo tofauti kadha wa kadha baina ya hayo makundi mawili. Hizo nilizotaja ni kwa uchache.

Mfano mzuri wa Wafanyabiashara wa Kundi A ni kampuni ya VUNJABEI.

VUNJABEI kwa hivi sasa inamiliki MADUKA 8 katika mikoa 6 tofauti;

Mwanza, Dodoma, Iringa, Mbeya, na Arusha, kote huko kuna duka moja moja. Kisha mkoani Dar es Salaam yapo maduka 3.

Leo ukaamua kuchagua Biashara moja unayoipenda. Kisha ukaweka lengo kwamba utaifanya Biashara hiyo moja tu, kwa miaka yako yote utakayoishi hapa Duniani.

Ok, hadi siku unafariki, Biashara yako itakua imetimiza miaka mingapi ??

Iko hivi;

Miaka 20 iliyopita (mwaka 2001), kampuni k**a vile Twitter, Snapchat, Tesla, Facebook, Tik Tok, Uber, nk, hazikuwepo kabisa.

Lakini leo hii, kampuni hizo ni kubwa sana, na zinafanya mauzo ya mabilioni kila mwaka.

Je, miaka 20 ijayo (ifikapo mwaka 2041), "kampuni yako" itakua inatimiza umri wa miaka mingapi ??

K**a unafikiri miaka 20 ijayo ni mbali sana, kumbuka kwamba miaka 20 iliyopita ilikua ni juzi tu hapo, na ulikuwepo.

Hivyo basi, k**a haujafa katika hiyo miaka 20 iliyopita, amini kabisa kwamba upo uwezekano mkubwa pia usife katika miaka 20 ijayo.

Miaka 20 ijayo sio mbali k**a inavyofikiriwa. Wale wote walio chini ya miaka 35 kwa hivi sasa, bado watakuwepo makazini wanadunda k**a kawaida.

Building a “unicorn”

You know by now what is a “unicorn”—a StartUp that rises in value to $1bn or more!

This is every modern entrepreneur’s dream. This is really, really difficult. And in Africa there are many factors that conspire to make it almost impossible, with very few countries with companies that size.

I use the word “almost” because it can happen: I personally have launched 5 such companies in my entrepreneurial career. Two of them were built in the last two years—during the pandemic—proving that a skilled entrepreneur can build in any conditions.

“As entrepreneurs we fight in the conditions not against the conditions”. This is why I have personally refrained from engaging in the politics of any country, even when I’m openly attacked.

Unicorns can be built in EVERY business area. If you want to build a Unicorn, you need to develop 5 critical skills:

1. Master the power of Innovation and Marketing;

2. Master scale through the 3Ps;

3. Master the “SKILL” of raising capital.

4. Master “Partnership 360”. We “leverage” the businesses of others to build our own on condition that we help them build theirs!

5. Know Africa, properly.

Unless you come from Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya or Egypt, it is hard to build a Unicorn that is dependent only on one country. You have to be able to operate in other countries. This, too, is a to be Mastered, and like all the other skills, harder than it looks!

There is an underlying pre-condition to all this: You must personally [CONTINUALLY] in the area of business that you choose, and in broader entrepreneurship best practice.

These are the things I have written about and demonstrated to you over and over again for the last seven years.

It is why I feel my job is done and will close the platform at the end of this year.

Biashara yako inaweza ikawa inafanya scalling kwa mifumo tofauti, kutegemeana na aina ya biashara unayofanya.

Kwa mfano;

K**a mwaka huu umehudumia wateja 10, hakikisha mwaka kesho unahudumia wateja 15. Kadiri miaka inavyosogea, na idadi ya wateja wako iwe inaongezeka.

K**a mwaka huu ulifuga ng'ombe wawili, basi mwakani hakikisha wamefika ng'ombe saba.

Mwaka huu ukifungua duka moja, basi baada ya miaka 3, uwe umeongeza duka la pili, au mengi zaidi.

nyingine ni ile ya kubaki na "unit" ile ile moja, lakini ukaiboresha zaidi.

Kwa mfano; Ukianza kwa kumiliki mgahawa mmoja, baada ya miezi kadhaa unaongeza idadi ya vyakula unavyopika, na ukubwa wa eneo la mgahawa wako.
Unakua bado uko na mgahawa ule ule mmoja, lakini umeuboresha zaidi.

Scalling inaweza kufanyika kwa njia mbalimbali kadiri wewe mwenyewe unavyoona.

Miaka michache iliyopita Kampuni ya VUNJABEI ilikua inamiliki duka moja pekee jijini Dar es Salaam, maeneo ya Sinza Madukani.

Mwaka huu, 2021, VUNJABEI inamiliki maduka 8 katika mikoa 6 tofauti hapa Tanzania.
Huu ni ukuaji wa kasi sana. Fast Scalling.
