Empowering Women Entrepreneurs through Intellectual Property (IP): A Success Story in Tanzania

At DEMO Innovators Ltd, in partnership with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA), we are proud to have created significant impact through our "Women Entrepreneurs: IP for Branding, Product Development, and Commercialization" project. This initiative has equipped 34 women SMEs with the tools and knowledge needed to protect and grow their businesses using intellectual property.

A shining examples of this success is: -
1. ZETTY ENTERPRISES,
2. ROCANZO GENERAL SUPPLIERS,
3. ACLA HONEY ENTERPRISES LIMITED, and
4. MKAMALI INTEGRATED VENTURES ENTERPRISES LIMITED", which recently registered its trademark (MIVE) under No. TZ/T/2023/2352 with BRELA. This milestone protects MIVE’s unique brand for unprocessed agricultural products, providing security and ownership in Tanzania’s competitive market. With the guidance of DEMO, WIPO, and BRELA, MIVE was able to navigate the trademark process and ensure its products stand out, adding value to both the business and the agricultural sector.

The success of these 37 Women SMEs is a testament to the power of intellectual property in transforming small businesses, giving women entrepreneurs the confidence to grow their brands, protect their innovations, and expand into new markets. Together, we are fostering sustainable business growth and empowering women to take charge of their entrepreneurial journeys.

DEMO have managed to mentor, train and educate more than 70+ Women Entrepreneurs (WE) in Dar es salaam and Arusha region of Tanzania, through branding, product development and commercialization. This program was initiated by World Intellectual Property Organization ( ) with collaboration with Business Registration & Licensing Agency ( ) and implemented by Innovators Ltd, the program consists of Intellectual Property (IP) awareness, entrepreneurship development. Moreover, Women Entrepreneurs were trained on how to brand their products and services by the added value of IP.

By the help of our IP experts, WEs created good business names for trading, designed logos/marks for distinguishing them from their competitors, currently 50+ business names and 70+ marks/logos were registered and filed at Business Registration and Licensing Agency ( ).

The main objective of this project is “to promote gender equality, empower Women Entrepreneurs business through Intellectual Property and create a supportive ecosystem for their Brandings, Product development and to ensure that IP is well utilized for economic development of Tanzania”.

Here comes the end of workshop for Tanzania Women Entrepreneurs (WEs): Intellectual Property (IP) for branding, product development and commercialization held on 11th December 2023 at Jemirex Hotel. Over 60 WEs were mentored for 6 moths, through various IP stages from Trade/Business names formulation and registration at , Marks development, design, branding and registration/filing/protection. We thank for technical support through IP experts in Tanzania, partnered with and collaborating with , and to enable these WEs secure their Trademarks protection.

We thank for collaborating with Tanzania IP office , , and , we have archived 99% Women Entrepreneurs (WEs) project for Intellectual Property for branding, product development and commercialization in Tanzania. A total of 26 business names were registered at and certificates issued to WEs. We helped the WEs to develop 26 trade/service marks for their business, well branded marks has been filed and registered with BRELA. We are thinking of how to help the sustain the marks in the market, by helping them secure market, working capital and entrepreneurship shills.

Securing a registered trademark protects your brand, and provides you with the tools to prevent someone using similar signs and riding off the back of your business. If you do not protect your trademark by registering it, then you may find you are legally prevented from expanding your business.

DEMO have managed to mentor, train and educate more than 30 Women Entrepreneurs (WE) in Dar es salaam, through branding, product development and commercialization. The program consists of Intellectual Property (IP) awareness, entrepreneurship development. Moreover, Women Entrepreneurs were trained on how to brand their products and services by the added value of IP.

By the help of IP expert, WEs created good business names for trading, designed logos/marks for distinguishing them from their competitors, currently 26+ business names and 21+ marks/logos were registered and filed at Business Registration and Licensing Agency (BRELA).

The main objective of this project is “to promote gender equality, empower Women Entrepreneurs business through Intellectual Property and create a supportive ecosystem for their Brandings, Product development and to ensure that IP is well utilized for economic development of Tanzania”.

THEME: “WOMEN AND IP – ACCELERATING INNOVATION AND CREATIVITY”.

We invite more stakeholders to support this noble project organized by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in cooperation with the Business Registrations and Licensing Agency (BRELA), the University of Dar Es Salaam (UDSM), DEMO Innovators Limited (DEMO) and Pan African Legal Empowerment Initiatives (PALEI)
