Island states have a sensitive and finite environmental systems. Zanzibar as an archipelago generates over 92,000 metric tonnes of waste a year, witch is the equivalent of the
weight of a Boeing 747 per day, contaminating the environment and causing implications to both public health and the islands economy. The solution to Zanzibar’s deteriorating waste problem can be found in the boarder-land between the private and the social sector. Even though the tourism-industry is responsible for a substantial amount of the islands waste production, any sustainable long-term solution also requires the local communities to become a part of the solution. This can be achieved by providing access to education and cheap waste management services, something that normally is not feasible without international subsidies or governmentally financed services. By using the infrastructure put in place by private collection service we can reduce the operational cost and thereby enable a locally adapted community waste management system focusing on education, awareness and the training of local micro-entrepreneurs.
