More so than any of Marvel’s other big reveals at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con, Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’s first trailer’s something to legitimately get hyped about.

During Marvel’s big Hall H showcase today, actress Letitia Wright said that her and the rest of the cast and crew’s goal with Wakanda Forever was to honor the legacy that Chadwick Boseman left following his passing. Wakanda Forever’s trailer doesn’t directly acknowledge what’s become of T’Challa in the MCU, but his absence and the recent discovery of a new underwater nation once again have the world — Wakanda in particular — on edge. While Wakandans like Shuri (Wright), Queen Ramonda (Angela Bassett), and Okoye (Danai Gurira) are seen mourning and seemingly trying to figure out how they’re going to move on, the trailer also spotlights a new group of amphibian humanoids — one of whom is born with winged feet.

In Marvel’s comics, the kingdoms of Wakanda and Atlantis have clashed on a number of occasions to calamitous effect as their respective monarchs’ egos clashed. Here, the MCU’s Namor (Tenoch Huerta) and the other Atlanteans appear to have ties to Mayan cultures, and their arrival seems to prompt some sort of confrontation with the humans of the surface world. Along with M’Baku (Winston Duke), Ayo (Florence Kasumba), and the rest of the Dora Milaje, Riri Williams (Dominque Thorne) is seen gearing up for the battle Wakanda’s about to face, and judging from the trailer’s shots of mayhem they’re going to need her help.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever also stars Florence Kasumba, Michaela Coel, and Martin Freeman. The movie hit theaters November 11th.

Though the titles for a number of Marvel Studios’ upcoming films like Black Panther: Wakanda Forever and Ant-Man & The Wasp: Quantumania are a little cumbersome, fairly soon, we’re all going to know them as the projects that marked the ending the the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 4 and the beginning of Phase 5 — two chapters in the Multiverse Saga.

Kevin Feige and the rest of Marvel Studios’ braintrust took to Hall H at this year’s San Diego Comic-Con to discuss details about how Phase 4 is set to come to an end later this year with Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and Phase 5 will kick off with the third Ant-Man film. While we knew that movies like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, the fourth Captain America, and Blade were on the horizon, what wasn’t yet clear was what sort of larger story they were all building towards.

Marvel is looking far into its future at San Diego Comic-Con. The company confirmed that Black Panther: Wakanda Forever (which just got its first trailer) will end phase four of its cinematic universe on November 11th, and outlined what to expect for phase five. But Marvel also took things one step farther and detailed phase six of the MCU with a trio of movie announcements.

Things will kick off with Fantastic Four on November 28th, 2024; followed by Avengers: The Kang Dynasty on May 2nd, 2025; before wrapping up with Avengers: Secret Wars on November 7th, 2025. Marvel is calling this period of the MCU — phases four through six — the “Multiverse saga,” which will come to a close with Secret Wars.

The MCU keeps rolling on.

The first animated movie from Avatar Studios, the team Nickelodeon set up to work on movies and shows in the Last Airbender universe, will feature Avatar Aang and his friends, according to an announcement made during San Diego Comic-Con (via Gizmodo). While there’s no word on casting or a story synopsis yet, some fans have expressed excitement over the possibility of getting to see Team Avatar — made up of Aang, Katara, Sokka, Toph, Zuko, Suki, and, of course, Appa — in something new.

According to Polygon, the show will focus on Team Avatar as young adults, giving us a look at some of the events that happen between The Last Airbender and The Legend of Korra. There are, of course, a fair share of people who were hoping to see something focused on new characters, like those from the novels. (Given the tease in the announcement video, that’s understandable.)

The Gray Man just debuted on Netflix last week, but the streamer already has some big plans for it as a budding franchise. Today, Netflix announced not just a sequel for the thriller but also a spinoff, instantly turning The Gray Man into the company’s next cinematic universe. The company says its plan is to turn it into “a major spy franchise.”

Netflix says that the currently untitled sequel is in development and that star Ryan Gosling and directors Joe and Anthony Russo are all set to return alongside co-writer Stephen McFeely. There’s no word on when it might debut. As for the spinoff, Paul Wernick and Rhett Reese, best known for their work on the Deadpool movies, will serve as writers. According to Netflix “the logline is being kept under wraps” for now.

“WE HAD ALWAYS INTENDED FOR THE GRAY MAN TO BE PART OF AN EXPANDED UNIVERSE”
“The audience reaction to The Gray Man has been nothing short of phenomenal,” the Russos said in a statement. “We are so appreciative of the enthusiasm that fans across the world have had for this film. With so many amazing characters in the movie, we had always intended for the Gray Man to be part of an expanded universe, and we are thrilled that Netflix is announcing a sequel with Ryan, as well as a second script that we’re excited to talk about [it] soon.”

A sequel and a spinoff are in the works.

After some teasing on Twitter, Netflix has released the latest trailer for Guillermo del Toro’s Pinocchio, showing a dark and beautiful rendition of the classic tale — with the gorgeous attention to detail the director is known for.

We first got a glimpse at the stop-motion film through a short teaser at the beginning of the year. It stars Ewan McGregor as Cricket and David Bradley as Geppetto, with Gregory Mann in the titular role. Del Toro — best known for films like The Shape of Water, Crimson Peak, and Pan’s Labyrinth — is co-directing Pinocchio alongside Mark Gustafson, and he has previously described the movie as something of a passion project.

“After years of pursuing this dream project, I found my perfect partner in Netflix,” he said back in 2020. “We have spent a long time curating a remarkable cast and crew and have been blessed by continuous support from Netflix to quietly and carefully soldier on, barely missing a beat. We all love and practice animation with great passion and believe it to be the ideal medium to retell this classic story in a completely new way.”

The movie is part of a mini-resurgence of stop-motion at Netflix. In addition to Pinocchio, the streaming service released the anthology The House early this year, has Wendell & Wild coming this fall, and is working on new Chicken Run and Wallace & Gromit movies.

Pinocchio is due to hit Netflix this holiday season.

The director’s latest passion project.
