🇪🇬 announces ambition to become a global with support from Russia

Egypt, the world’s largest importer of Russian , has announced plans to develop a global grain trading and storage hub. The statement was made by Supply Minister Sherif Farouk during a grain forum in Sochi, Russia. According to him, the strategy includes building infrastructure for grain storage, processing, and trade, targeting markets in the Middle East, Africa, and other regions.

The project envisions the development of modern elevator capacity, transport systems, and grain processing facilities. Egypt is also considering cooperation with Russia on developing exchange infrastructure, establishing price benchmarks, and improving transparency across supply chains. The minister said these steps are aimed at strengthening the resilience and efficiency of the country’s strategic agricultural commodity markets.

🇷🇴 risk increases uncertainty on ’s market

Romania’s sunflower seed market is entering the season under elevated weather-related risks, which are increasingly shaping yield expectations and price dynamics. While soil conditions remain relatively favourable for early crop development, moisture deficits in deeper soil layers are already raising concerns, particularly in the western regions of the country. UkrAgroConsult estimates potential yields at around 1.5 t/ha, while other forecasts remain higher, highlighting growing market uncertainty.

Against this backdrop, Romanian processors are actively building inventories, while both old- and new-crop sunflower seed prices remain firm due to risk-hedging purchasing behaviour. Despite weather pressure, export activity remains relatively strong, and imports from neighbouring countries continue to support domestic demand, partially offsetting potential production shortfalls.

🇺🇦 maintains a price advantage on export markets

Ukrainian wheat currently remains among the cheapest on the global market, with 11.5–12.5% protein wheat offered at $235–240/t FOB, compared to $242–244/t FOB for Russian wheat and around $245–250/t FOB for US and European wheat. Against this backdrop, export purchase in Ukrainian ports increased by UAH 50–100/t over the past week.

Feed wheat prices in Ukraine rose to UAH 11,000–11,100/t, while milling wheat climbed to UAH 11,200–11,300/t delivered to Black Sea ports. At the same time, cool and rainy weather has improved crop conditions and boosted expectations for the new harvest. Between May 1–25, Ukraine exported 951 thsd tons of wheat, with Egypt, Algeria, and Yemen remaining the key buyers. Analysts note that in the new season Ukrainian wheat will again compete aggressively with Russian supplies in North African markets.

🇦🇿 covers only 55% of its needs

Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev stated that the country covers only 55% of its domestic wheat demand, calling the current level of self-sufficiency unacceptable. According to him, despite significant investments in the agricultural sector and the development of agroparks, wheat production has shown little growth in recent years. Azerbaijan currently produces around 1.573 mln tons of wheat, while imports amount to 1.267 mln tons.

The president stressed the need to reduce dependence on imported grain, although he acknowledged that Azerbaijan is unlikely to become fully self-sufficient in food wheat due to geographical and agricultural limitations. At the same time, Aliyev described the situation with other grain crops more positively, noting that self-sufficiency in those categories reaches around 95%, while imports remain relatively limited.

🇬🇷 market under pressure from low prices and weak harvest

Greece’s olive oil sector is facing a difficult season after the weak 2025/26 harvest, which totaled less than 200 thsd tons. In key producing regions such as Crete and the Peloponnese, extra virgin olive oil prices have fallen by around 30% compared to last year and currently range between €4.5–5.4/kg. Due to low profitability, many producers are delaying sales in hopes of better market conditions.

The situation is further complicated by unfavorable weather, the spread of diseases and pests, and competition from cheaper olive oil imports from Tunisia. In some regions, production declined by nearly 40%, while farmers warn about growing risks to the sector’s competitiveness. At the same time, producers remain hopeful for a better 2026/27 season thanks to strong olive tree flowering across many parts of the country.

🌾 extends losses amid geopolitical signals and anticipation of USDA report

US wheat futures continued their longest losing streak since early January as traders reacted to signs of possible progress in negotiations aimed at easing the Middle East conflict. Additional pressure on the market comes from expectations surrounding the upcoming US Department of Agriculture (USDA) report. On the Chicago exchange, the most active wheat contracts fell by as much as 1.6%, marking a fourth consecutive session in negative territory, while corn and soybean futures also declined.

At the same time, losses were partly limited by rising oil prices following new incidents in the region and the return of a so-called “war risk premium.” Markets are closely monitoring developments in US-Iran talks related to a ceasefire and the security of shipping through the Strait of Hormuz. Additional volatility is expected after the USDA releases updated data on US wheat crop conditions amid ongoing drought concerns in the Great Plains region.

🇺🇦 enter a new logistics reality

Ukrainian agricultural exports are entering a new phase where logistical flexibility is becoming just as important as shipment volumes. According to UkrAgroConsult, export flows remain resilient: in the first half of May, shipments totaled 2.3 mln tons following a record 5+ mln tons in April. Corn remains the key export driver, supported by steady demand from Turkey and the EU.

At the same time, the logistics structure is gradually shifting, with rail transport playing a growing role, especially for sunflower oil shipments, while the balance between sea and land routes becomes increasingly dynamic. Logistics diversification and freight conditions are having a stronger impact on trading decisions, although overall export resilience remains high despite mounting logistical pressure.

🇮🇶 is losing independence due to the water crisis

Iraq, considered one of the world’s oldest centers of agriculture, is becoming increasingly dependent on and imports due to unstable domestic production. Despite significant government spending on agricultural support and grain procurement, the country remains one of the world’s largest wheat flour importers. The situation is aggravated by Iraq’s critical dependence on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, up to 90% of whose water resources originate outside the country.

In recent years, Iraq has faced declining water availability, more frequent droughts, and unstable wheat yields. Even the record harvest of 2024 failed to ensure long-term self-sufficiency, with production falling again the following season. Additional pressure comes from the state food subsidy system, which requires millions of tons of grain annually and is largely financed by oil revenues, making it vulnerable to fluctuations in energy markets.

🐄 Rising force Asia to rethink feed rations

Higher soybean meal prices and new import restrictions in Indonesia are pushing beef producers across Southeast Asia to revise their feeding strategies. Under the new rules, soybean meal imports must be handled through a state-owned company, limiting direct purchases by feed mills. Additional pressure comes from disruptions in maritime logistics linked to the Middle East conflict, which have increased the cost of feed ingredients from Argentina, Brazil, and the US.

Against this backdrop, producers are increasingly turning to cheaper alternatives such as cassava, copra meal, and DDGS. However, experts warn that replacing soybean meal without maintaining a proper amino acid balance could negatively affect animal productivity.

🚢 Vessel carrying stolen Ukrainian grain heads back to Russia after rejection by Israel and Turkey

The bulk carrier PANORMITIS, transporting grain from temporarily occupied Ukrainian territories, has entered the Dardanelles and is likely heading back to Russia after failed attempts to unload in Israel and Turkey. According to the SeaKrime project of the Myrotvorets Center, the vessel was initially bound for the Israeli port of Haifa with grain taken from occupied Berdiansk, but the Israeli trader refused to accept the cargo.

The vessel later attempted to unload in the Turkish port of Iskenderun, but that effort also failed. SeaKrime journalist Kateryna Yaresko believes the ship may return to the Russian ports of Kavkaz or Novorossiysk, while the grain cargo could be offered to another buyer.

💰 for – at their peak

The corn market remained supported by active demand, with port prices exceeding USD 230/mt CPT Odesa - the highest level since August 2025. During the week of May 15–22, the price increased by $2.50 per ton.

Demand continues to outpace supply despite the fact that Ukraine still holds relatively large exportable corn stocks for the current season, estimated at more than 8 M mt. However, a significant share of these inventories remains inactive in the market, as producers are reluctant to accelerate sales amid rising prices.

The Ukrainian market is currently moving against global trends. International corn prices remain under pressure due to the rapid pace of planting in the US. Moreover, medium-term support could emerge from reduced corn acreage in the EU and weather-related risks affecting Brazil’s second corn crop.
