Winston sat in his usual corner, gazing into an empty glass. Now and again he glanced up at a vast face which eyed him from the opposite wall. BIG BROTHER IS WATCHING YOU, the caption said. Unbidden, a waiter came and filled his glass up with Victory Gin, shaking into it a few drops from another bottle with a quill through the cork. It was saccharine flavoured with cloves, the speciality of the cafe.
*gaze - to look for a long time at someone or something or in a particular direction - смотреть не отрываясь

*glance - to look somewhere for a short time - взглянуть на что-либо
E.g. He glanced at his watch.
* unbidden - not invited or wanted - непрошенный
E.g. At night, images would come unbidden into her mind.
*quill - a long, sharp point - перо ( для письма), игла (дикообраза), тонкая трубочка
E.g. He wrote rapidly on course paper with a quill of goose feathers.
*clove - a small, dark-brown, dried flower that is used as a spice -

E.g. The main spices in most mulled wine mixes are cinnamon, clove, and nutmeg.
