In 1798, the new emperor Pavel the First “cut off oxygen” to the city, depriving it of investments and benefits. The acuteness of the moment was added by the fact that by 1800 the Comte de Ribas fell out of favor.

In full accordance with the mores of those times, all projects of the official died along with his career. Barely begun work on the construction of the Odessa harbor hopelessly stopped.
The situation for Odessa was disappointing. Saving himself and the city, De Ribas decided to prove to the emperor the necessity of building a port in Odessa. It was decided to give a bribe ... oranges.

In St. Petersburg, "Pomeranians" (as citrus fruits were then called) came in a difficult way through the Baltic Sea. The way of trading caravans with “colonial” goods lasted for more than one month, so even the fruits of the emperor's table were served, to put it mildly, slightly rotten.

The main difficulty in transferring “bribes” to the emperor was the delivery of the fruit in safety. Having bought three thousand selected Greek oranges, each was fumigated with sulfur and wrapped in wax paper. The package was delivered in record time - three weeks. Early delivery was facilitated by quick delivery - a tobogganing path was opened, and a written instruction from full admiral De Ribas. At one of the imperial receptions, De Ribas made oranges with a broad gesture to Paul the First.

According to the legend, Pavel, having tasted “orange”, said, they say, “they all lied to me about Odessa and its citizens. This is a very necessary town ... ".

This sculpture is called the “House of the Sun”, which was created by the famous sculptor and painter Mikhail Reva. As planned by the author, the sun sets at every dawn through these doors to Odessa. This door is on Langeron. It is a bronze copy of the old Odessa door, which in the XIX century decorated the main entrance to the Odessa house and proudly met and escorted residents and guests.
