Food for thought ;

A True Life Testimony.

Isaiah 55:8-9 New King James Version,

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,” declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways.

This is the scripture that helped me to pull through a catastrophe that happened to me some years ago.

After years of living in poverty, working in farms and suffering, God blessed me with a company. For the first time ever in my life I tested the nice of good life. My company was flourishing and I was buying cars one after the other. I was recognized in the community of Masunga, Botswana. One day hell broke loose and 2 gentlemen from CID department come to my office.

The story is long, to cut the story short, I became a victim of human jealous and I had to leave the country. In a short period of time I tried to sell my belongings to return to my mother land.

The process was very painful. We even tried to pray at church. Pray for God to save the situation. I am sure God in Heaven was just smiling and say " your ways are not my ways".

In our eyes, my life was finished. To return to Zimbabwe seems like serious punishment, this is the time of higher inflation and most people were living Zimbabwe to other countries, yet I was supposed to do the opposite.

When I looked at the situation myself I saw a big disaster and I remember one day I went to pray alone and I said " God when I was a nobody, you cared for me, now that I am starting to live a good life, why is this happening to me, if you really love me, help me to stay in Botswana", but this never happened.

It is very painful to be forced to return to your home land without a proper planning after living in a foreign country for more than 11 years. There will be a lot to adjust.

Those who hurt me, celebrated my downfall because we all saw it as a downfall. I remember one day I went to my dearest friend (mother) Mai Rukuni, we prayed and she literally cried during the prayer, where I saw myself crying too.

In a short period of time, I became thin, depressed and I was treaded for depression. I was given pills to help me sleep. I almost had a stroke. I will never forget the support from my beautiful wife. She was besides me all the way telling me that, my love don't worry it shall all be fine.

Later, we packed our bags and say goodbye to Botswana with a swollen heart. I felt very unfairly treated. This was the worst event ever happened to me (yes besides loosing my mother offcourse)

All my efforts I worked for years falling apart while I was watching.

After I returned to Zimbabwe, the same month we registered Barmlo Investments. Side by side with my wife, we started all over again to build a new company, but this time with more wisdom.

In 3 years, my new Zimbabwean company started to give good fruits and it was 5 times bigger than my Botswana business. That is only when I realised that God brought me back to Zimbabwe for a reason.

Now my company worth millions of dollars which I don't think I could have achieved if I had stayed in Botswana. My return to Zimbabwe was a blessing but during the process I didn't know.

God's ways of doing things are very different from how we think or wish. He brought me back to Zimbabwe to bless me 20 times what I possessed in Botswana.

It's now 11 years since I left Botswana but to this day they still talk about my story. It is a very significant event that many people learned a lesson of life from.

The message I am sharing with you today is that Trust God and have faith in him. What ever you might go through today, it's just a temporary situation which shall come to pass one day.

When people do you wrong, it might be the opposite, in my shona language we say " kukava datya huri yambusa" meaning to say you might kik a frog to another side of the river without knowing that you are helping it to go to the other side of the river.

So when people plot evil against you, in most cases, it works in your advantage.

And remember God's ways are not our ways. He works in mysterious ways. Only what you need to do is to trust in him.

I am now more happier and rich than I was in Botswana. But I didn't wanted to return home because by then, it seemed like the worst thing ever to happen to me.

I have just decided to share my testimony with you today hoping that it may give you hope.

Get more of this story in my book The Herdboy.

DON'T INVEST IN RENTALS, BUSINESS IS BETTER...,

I believe you've come across people who tell you this, or heard something similar to it. Personally, I have told people the same countless times...,

Usually we say or you hear things like rental gives small annual return, recouping your investment will take longer.., Its not a wise investment etc.

Which is somehow true depending on which side of the table your sitting on. The table of inexperienced us or those who have been in the business world, experienced and succeeded.

The table of those who have knowledge about different investment vehicles and business or those who don't..,

The table one sits on matters alot when it comes to such decisions and choices. The person telling you doesn't know which table you sit on.

We also give you claims that a business gives you 30 to 40 percent return. What we don't tell you is, less than 10% of small businesses can guarantee you 30% plus return year after year for close to 5 consecutive years or more.

Most small business besides paying employees salary and business owners divident make small net profits, sometimes not at all. If they're doing very well, you can make upto 50% or more return, but these are 1% cases.

We also don't tell you that, of the fair but irregular return from these small businesses which we tell you to start, the risk involved is much higher (this is economic principle, higher return comes with higher risk). We don't know your risk tolerance!

This means most small scale businesses have very high risks. The failure rate is alarming, around 90 percent failure rate. Starting a small business, your chances of success or being operational after 3yrs is less 10%.

We also don't tell you that running business is hard, very very hard actually even experienced business people struggle. Add the fact that most African economic setups dont support small businesses with there unfavorable incentives like high taxes, license hurdles, lack of support, red tape etc makes it worse

And you, not being a business person before actually makes it worse. You lack basic skills, knowledge and experience about business. You are ok with the job and salary, you just want something to add on what you make.

Advising you to start a business rather than going rental without considering your risk tolerance, knowledge and skills, experience etc is not a good advise especially looking at the high risk involved and inconsistent returns.

We who somehow believe we can take the risky business or alternative investment journey, we shouldn't tell you to do the same, especially when the facts we have are inaccurate and most times from inexperienced sources.

If you have some good income or saving, your not the business type, have limited knowledge about alternative investments, you have a good paying job, you don't have time, then rental investment is good for you in the long run if you can afford its costs.

You can get small annual returns, but the return is 90 plus guaranteed and for good years to come. You have capital appreciation and above all, sense of security for you and your family. Don't listen to us, do what is right according to your circumstances and financial plan.

Which brings me to the question, Do you have a Financial Plan?

How to Grow Beans

How to Classify your Beans in Uganda
Common beans range from being determinate to indeterminate. The extreme indeterminate types are grown as climbers with staking to support their stems.

Determinate growth means that the bean plants stop producing new leaves (growing vegetatively) once the flowers have developed. Vine-type field bean varieties have indeterminate growth, meaning they continue to grow, flower and set pods as long as temperature and moisture permit.

Determinate beans are also called bush or dwarf and grow up to about one and half feet high, while climbing beans may grow as high as 2.5m.

In East Africa especially Uganda we have Nambale, K131 (1994), K132 (1994), NABE 2(1995), NABE 3, NABE 4, NABE 5 etc. All these varieties are bush type. Climbing types include NABE (7C, 8C, 9C, 10C), the most recent is NABE 12 released in 2003.

What your beans will need to grow
Soil requirements; You can grow your beans on both fertile smooth and rough seedbeds. However when you grow beans on smooth soils, you should be cautious enough to avoid soil erosion. Your beans will need optimal levels of Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium; these are major limiting factors for production.

How to plant your beans
We recommend row planting.

The depth of planting shouldn’t exceed 5cm as your seeds may not germinate when planted deep.

We would recommend spacing of (50x10cm or 25x20cm) for bush types, and (50x15cm or 50x20cm) for climbing beans.
...and please remember to stake your Climbing beans.

How to manage w**ds in your beans garden
Beans should be kept w**d free especially in the early stages of the crop growth.

You will normally need just one w**ding operation at about 3 week after planting.

Quick Tips for Planting your Beans in Africa
On apreviously prepared land, open up holes of 2-5 cm depth in rows
Sowing is preferable at the on set of rains
To each hole add 2-3 seeds in each hole
Then thinly cover with alayer of soil to cover the seeds
Be sure to water your seeds if you sow before the on set of the rains
Monitor w**d and insect pests as these can slow down your production
W**d your beans 2 to 3 weeks after sowing or depending on the w**d intensity
You may adopt multipurpose fertilizers like NPK to supplement nutrients
Harvest your bean pods in the 7th or 6th week depending on the variety and date of planting

Food for thought ;

How to avoid losing a life savings.

It is common that after a period of working especially under formal sector, it be in government or in the private sector, after a certain period one has to retire and under normal circumstances, he /she will be paid retirement package.

A certain gentleman contacted me and said my son, after I received my retired package, I returned to my home town and tried to established a business but unfortunately, things didn't work out.

He lost all the money bit bit until he remained with nothing just in a period of 3 years. All life savings went down the drain while he was try to establish a business.

In our conversation I was asking more questions so that we could establish where he went wrong. I wanted to know the type of business that he ventured into, what was his model and when did he realised that he was losing money and what he did about it before it was too late.

It was a disaster, the gentleman started a business where he didn't have experience. He opened a supermarket. He started to realize that he was loosing money when he couldn't restock and he kept doing the same thing hoping for a change.

This is the situation many of us find ourselves in. You rise some funds and decide to start a business. You started well with let's say $1000.00. Along the way you see now you have left with $500.00. You try to figure out where could be the other $500 gone. Or you just find yourself bankrupt.

What happens in business is a game of invest your money in anything that you believe is profitable and you should get your money back with a profit. This is how business must operate. But when you see yourself put your money in a project but return missing some figures, then just know that you are doing it the wrong way.

Before you invest in any business, you should understand the time frame where you are going to wait before you see profit. You also need to understand the risks involved in the type of business that you want to venture into.

Business it's a game of calculation and playing with numbers. Business is not a game of lucky like many people thinks. Starting a business hoping that one day I will be luck and make huge profits. It doesn't work that way.

In my next post I want to talk about possible ideas how a person can invest his /her life savings /retirement package. This kind of money should be invested in a business with less risks.
