This is Tsavorite!
A detailed explanation regarding the differentiation of Tsavorite from Emerald.
While both are stunning green gems, emeralds (a beryl) feature deep, bluish-green tones and characteristic internal fractures (jardin). In contrast, tsavorites (a variety of garnet) have a brighter, pure-to-yellowish green and typically display exceptional clarity and brilliance without requiring oils or resin treatments.
Tsavorite and emerald differ across several core categories:
1. Mineral Family and Color
▪︎Emerald: An emerald is a variety of the mineral beryl, with its lush color derived from trace amounts of chromium and vanadium. They typically have a classic, deep green hue with bluish undertones.
▪︎Tsavorite: Tsavorite is a rare, vibrant variety of grossular garnet. It is celebrated for its radiant, vivid pure green or yellowish-green color, which often closely rivals the finest emeralds.
2. Clarity and Brilliance
▪︎Emerald: Known for their natural inclusions and internal fractures, emeralds frequently have a "sleepy" look compared to other gems. These inclusions—often called jardin (French for garden)—are accepted as part of an emerald's unique signature.
▪︎Tsavorite: Tsavorite is incredibly clean to the naked eye. Because it lacks heavy internal fractures and boasts a much higher refractive index than emerald, it reflects light better and exhibits significantly more fire and sparkle.
3. Hardness and Durability
▪︎Emerald: Emeralds rate between 7.5 and 8 on the Mohs scale, but their numerous internal inclusions make the stone somewhat brittle and susceptible to chipping or cracking if struck.
▪︎Tsavorite: Tsavorite rates slightly lower on the Mohs scale (7 to 7.5). However, because it grows remarkably free of inclusions, it has a higher overall toughness and is considered much more resistant to everyday wear and breakage than an emerald.
4. Treatments
▪︎Emerald: The majority of natural emeralds on the market are treated with oils or artificial resins to fill in their surface-reaching fractures and improve their clarity.
▪︎Tsavorite: Tsavorite is rarely, if ever, treated. The color and clarity you see are entirely natural, which appeals to collectors who prefer untreated gems.
5. Rarity and Price
▪︎Emerald: Emeralds have been prized for millennia, are mined across the globe (Colombia, Brazil, Zambia, etc.), and are widely available in various qualities.
▪︎Tsavorite: Discovered relatively recently in 1967 in East Africa (primarily the Kenya-Tanzania border), tsavorite is geologically hundreds of times rarer than emerald. While it is generally more affordable than comparable top-tier emeralds, its extreme rarity in larger sizes makes large, high-quality tsavorites highly valuable collector's items.
