Uganda’s government has announced a ban on streaming live footage of riots, “unlawful processions,” and violent incidents in the lead-up to the January 15 elections, reports Reuters. The authorities have detained hundreds of opposition supporters ahead of the election, which will again pit the 81-year-old Museveni against the 43-year-old pop-star-turned politician Bobi Wine. Officials say this measure aims to prevent panic and curb escalation but critics argue it could suppress media freedom during a highly contested campaign between Museveni and Wine.

Uganda’s opposition leader Bobi Wine has urged his supporters to download Bitchat, a decentralized messaging app, ahead of the January 14, 2026, elections. He warned the government may shut down internet and social media services. He cited past election-related blackouts under President Yoweri Museveni, including a four-day nationwide shutdown in 2021. Wine said the app would allow offline communication and the sharing of election materials through Bluetooth in the event of an internet shutdown. The app, launched in July by Jack Dorsey, does not require phone numbers or email addresses and was widely used during protests in Madagascar and Nepal.
