The new growing season is upon us in Uganda. Land preparation is vital to ensure that the field is ready for planting. A well-prepared field controls w**ds, recycles plant nutrients, and provides a soft soil mass for transplanting and a suitable soil surface for direct seeding. W**d suppression a key factor. We are applying post-germination fertiliser, and notably pre and post emergent w**d spraying by , next few weeks for farmers in Nwoya and Amuru. If you or any farmers you know are interested, please let us know. The next phase is to direct spraying efforts in areas of interest within a field, like a medical triage, and conduct variable rate application of inputs.

One of the jobs of land surveyors is marking key coordinates on the surveyed site using GPS data and often installing permanent controls like we are doing here for a new energy project in Mubende District, after a drone survey and report. If you need to make decisions on sizeable land you have opened, the use of drones to capture data and process into usable outputs like terrain models is highly recommended, not least to reduce risk.

Surveying with a drone has a number of advantages compared with the conventional approach. The key one is the same topographic accuracy but in a fraction of the time, workload and cost. Proper survey drones (using 40 Mpx sensors or better) can now achieve an absolute accuracy of 1 cm ground sampling distance, which means the length of one pixel on your map corresponds to 1 cm on the ground, in reality. Flexdrone is busy addressing a new layer of drone regulations proposed to be imposed on drone operators in Uganda on top of the existing regulations managed by the Uganda CAA. Drones are proving increasingly useful in understanding on-ground contexts and risks within energy facilities at required levels of detail. We just surveyed part of a hydropower plant in Kasese District to help engineers understand how to mitigate stormwater and landslide impact, and also, took imagery of power evacaution lines for analysis to support transmisison line maintenance needs.

The COVID-19 pandemic is leading to innovation in health care services delivery. In Ireland drones are now being used to deliver medicines to elderly and vulnerable people where they live, refer story below. The same could also happen In Uganda to improve COVID-19 response, quality of care and save lives, with the same kind of cooperation as achieved in Ireland. We have proposed and will continue to propose concepts to fill on-demand last-mile gaps in products and services, and make healthcare more customer-oriented. A Ugandan doctor told us "If the drones system was functional. It would really make a difference for us, we transporting samples everyday but with lots of access challenges."

The current COVID-19 lockdown in Uganda and elsewhere reminds us of the need to explore all channels to deliver healthcare and other products / services to the community in these times. This means laying the enabling foundations for new approaches and technologies, such as explained in the article below.
