Africa's innovation ecosystem is entering an exciting new chapter.

AI is moving into practical applications. FinTech is expanding beyond payments. Climate innovation is gaining momentum. EdTech is evolving, digital infrastructure is creating new possibilities, and young entrepreneurs are building solutions around the realities of their communities.
But perhaps the biggest opportunity is this: Africa has the chance to build solutions designed around its own unique challenges and opportunities.

At Hive Colab, we believe innovation grows when founders have the right community, knowledge, networks, mentorship, and opportunities to turn ideas into impact.

Which trend do you think will shape Africa's innovation ecosystem the most over the next five years?

Innovation is at its best when it isn't limited to a select few.

Across Africa, there are talented founders, creators, researchers, and problem-solvers with ideas capable of transforming communities. But talent alone isn't enough. People need access to knowledge, networks, technology, mentorship, and capital to turn those ideas into solutions.

Building an inclusive innovation ecosystem means creating spaces where more people can participate, more ideas can be heard, and more solutions can reach the people who need them.

At Hive Colab, we believe stronger ecosystems are built through access, collaboration, diversity, and shared opportunity.

The question isn't just "What are we innovating?"

It's also "Who gets the opportunity to innovate?"

A meaningful idea doesn’t always start as a business. Sometimes, it starts with a purpose.

For Esther Kakihoza and Cynthia Baakira, building Cleanette has always been about more than creating a product. It is about confronting period poverty and making menstrual health conversations more accessible, open, and informed.

As they shared during Founders Day Café, period poverty is not entirely about access to menstrual hygiene products. It is also a lack of information.

Ending period poverty therefore requires more than providing pads. It requires breaking stigma, creating awareness, encouraging open conversations, and building solutions that respond to real experiences.

At Hive Colab, we believe innovation becomes meaningful when it is driven by purpose and creates lasting impact.

Meet the Mastercard Foundation Edtech Fellowship 2026 Fellows: AniScholar Career Hub

AniScholar Career Hub is a Ugandan EdTech and workforce development platform bridging the gap between education and employment through career guidance, skills development, and industry exposure. The venture operates at the intersection of education, technology, and workforce readiness, targeting secondary school students, university learners, and TVET students during critical stages of career decision-making.

AniScholar addresses a widespread challenge where many young people complete their education without career clarity, practical exposure, or alignment between academic pathways and labour market demands. Its hybrid platform combines digital tools and programmatic interventions to support learners in identifying strengths, exploring career pathways, and acquiring industry-relevant competencies. The platform includes AI-powered career guidance and self-discovery tools, digital career mapping systems, work-readiness training programmes, bootcamps, and opportunities for mentorship, internships, and job shadowing.

Every great innovation begins with a problem that too many people have learned to live with.

Last week on Founders Day Café, Hive Colab welcomed Cynthia Baakira and Esther Kakihoza, Co-founders of Cleanette , for a great conversation moderated by Amanda Felly Baisuka

What began as an entrepreneurship class idea quickly became a mission to address one of the most overlooked challenges facing women and girls access to menstrual hygiene products. During the discussion, the founders reflected on asking a simple question: If condom dispensers could exist in public spaces, why couldn't sanitary pad dispensers?

That question led to the creation of Cleanette a manually operated sanitary pad dispensing machine that works without electricity, ensuring women and girls can access menstrual hygiene products anytime, even in places where power is unreliable.

Cynthia and Esther spoke forthrightly about the many prototypes that failed before they found a working solution, the financial sacrifices they made as university students, and the moments they questioned whether to continue. Yet each setback became another lesson in resilience, reminding everyone in the room that innovation is rarely a straight path.

They also challenged us to rethink period poverty. It's not only about access to sanitary products, it is also about information, awareness, and breaking the silence that continues to surround menstruation. By encouraging open conversations, they are helping create a future where menstrual health is treated as a normal part of life rather than a taboo subject.

Another compelling takeaway was the role of partnerships. From mentors and investors to organisations willing to champion their vision, the founders reminded us that building meaningful innovation is never a solo journey. Community is often the catalyst that transforms a promising idea into lasting impact.

At Hive Colab, we believe technology is most impactful when it solves real human challenges. Founders Day Café continues to create space for founders to share not only their successes, but also the lessons, failures, and perseverance behind the journey.

Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to another evening of authentic conversations, learning, and inspiration. We look forward to continuing these conversations as we support founders building solutions that improve lives across Uganda and beyond.

Meet the Mastercard Foundation Edtech Fellowship 2026 Fellows: Wokober Education Foundation

The Wokober Education Foundation is a high-potential Ugandan EdTech and education innovation venture transforming how competency-based learning is implemented in underserved schools. The organisation addresses a major systemic challenge within Uganda’s education sector: while the country has adopted a competency-based curriculum focused on practical and skills-based learning, many schools, particularly in low-income, rural, and post-conflict communities, lack the tools, infrastructure, and teacher support required to implement it effectively.

Wokober positions itself as a learning infrastructure provider rather than a standalone educational programme. Its model combines pedagogy, teacher enablement, materials access, and digital support systems into a scalable ecosystem designed for resource-constrained learning environments.
