'In the days just before Election-Day, political scientists, election administrators, IT experts, lawyers and security outfits were keen to observe how the media-led electoral campaigns would turn out. It was anticipated there would be an internet shutdown and increased use of Virtual Private Networks. There was public unease about how fake news and disinformation would affect citizen awareness of elections and whether social networking and microblogging platforms would be reliable sources of news. It remained to be seen whether social media would be used by propel destructive messages; whether users of Facebook would be aware that what they see is determined by their likes and dislikes, their comments and their clicks – leading to echo chambers of like-minded opinion. In previous elections, there had been a persistent divide between rural and urban media coverage of elections. Therefore, it was crucial to see whether media in general was simply an urban affair without effect beyond Kampala.'

The Kampala political market is for the highest bidder. Only the political party attending to the trending needs of the people will dominate. Any political party that wishes to take the electorate for granted will soon be left by the people.

Kampalans are exposed to enough media so as to make informed choices. They are also not ones to be guilt tripped into voting for a candidate simply based on a few tokens of material rewards. Here, the voters follow issues to a greater extent. It is why Kampala voters are capable of voting NUP, Independent, FDC ans NRM on the same day. They are able to distinguish between each candidate's campaign offering vis-a-vis their history,l of persistence and commitment to good governance. These citizens will gladly take a campaign goodies but still vote the competition in.

A party flag is not a magic wand to winning an election. A candidate needs to have character and social capital- enough to attract attention and inspire voters to get out and vote them into office.

Facebook relents in crack down on violent calls, hate speech and misinformation. The social media giant is a blamed for giving voice to extreme views and divisiveness.

Zuckerberg is quoted saying, “One of the top pieces of feedback that we’re hearing from our community right now is that people don’t want politics and fighting to take over their experience on our services.”

Indeed, social media has provided a veneer of confidence to hateful and disillusioned communities to vent their political frustrations at Otherness.

But it is possible too, that social media is best left to licensed political marketing entities such as the Political Marketing Group.

The social media giant previously enacted a temporary ban before the 2020 election.
