ISO 14001 IN THE PLASTICS SECTOR
Plastic is one of the most widely used materials around the world. It is so common in our lives that we don’t stop to think about how much we consume and generate every day. It has become so easy to find this material in basic things like water bottles, food packaging, the bags we are given at the supermarket and even in our clothes.
By definition, in the plastics sector there are a lot of materials that can be organic or not. However, this makes it essentially a mouldable and versatile material capable of satisfying the needs of different products in various industries, in addition to the fact that its price is quite accessible compared to other materials and it has a good durability.
THE CURRENT TREND AND THE REDUCTION OF THIS MATERIAL
According to chemical engineering researcher Robert Brunet, from Rovira i Virgili University in Tarragona, Spain, around 300 megatons of plastic are currently being consumed worldwide. The amount of plastic used by the world’s population has become immense and the controversy about the use of this material is not a new issue.
For some years now, the governments of different countries in the world, in collaboration with the large international organizations such as the UN, have been trying to reach agreements that guarantee the reduction of the use of plastic.
There are several reasons why this initiative has become so relevant in our days, the main one being the environmental issue since it is no secret that plastic is, among other factors, one of the major contaminating agents in the planet’s ecosystems. Being the most vulnerable and affected the oceans and seas by the plastic thrown by humans, causing material by some marine species causing their death.
HOW CAN MY COMPANY CONTRIBUTE TO THE REDUCTION OF PLASTIC?
In March of this year the UN determined with a declaration that from that date and until 2030 more than 200 countries committed themselves to reduce the use of plastic, in a collaboration in which governments, businessmen and all as a society intervene.
The question that many have probably asked is whether this can be achieved in just over 10 years, and the answer is yes, it is possible. It doesn’t matter how big your business is to be part of this initiative.
The first step to achieve it is the implementation of an Environmental Management System that helps us to account for and rationalize the consumption of plastic. With ISO 14001 we will be able to realize the amount of malleable that we are generating, as well as to identify if it is susceptible or not and to know if it can be reused and not wasted.
IMPLEMENTATION OF THE ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM.
The implementation of the ISO 14001 Management System is not only applicable for companies that are dedicated to the plastic sector since this Management System can be adapted to any type of organization since it mainly focuses on the environmental impact that the activities they carry out have.
With the ISO 14001 the organization demonstrates its commitment to the environment since it also helps to ensure proper compliance with certain legal requirements applicable depending on the scope of your company, having as main function to minimize the negative impact on it.
When an organization decides to implement this Management System, apart from contributing to the environment, it helps to have a better organization within the company, with which there is a notable progress in the existing processes, which translates into a decrease in costs since some aspects that could involve unnecessary expenses are well identified.
It should be mentioned that it improves the company’s image before the government and society in general, as well as all the interested parties, which guarantees a competitive advantage over other companies that do not have a certification of this standard. This not only increases customer satisfaction, but also attracts new customers through new market opportunities by generating an increase in their confidence.
