In 2002, Mustapha Mugisa had not yet been crowned as “Mr. Strategy,” but was conquering the toughest ACCA paper and leaving everyone else eating dust. Best National Candidate? A title most could only dream of. At that time, passing an ACCA exam was a tall order— absence of resources, few trainers and limited access to the Internet.

When PwC presented me with this award, I was elated. This wasn’t just an award; it was proof of dominance in a world of mnay dreamers.

Fast forward two decades, and this once-glorious trophy now sits quietly on a chessboard in my office!

A reminder that time doesn’t care about yesterday’s victories.

But let’s not forget—the man behind it all hasn’t stopped strategizing.

While the award gathers dust, my clients conferred me the title of “Mr. Strategy” and I am here playing bigger, bolder games.

Because true winners know the trophy isn’t the end—it’s just the opening move.

To all the dreamers, keep dreaming.

The Truth Nobody Tells You

Let’s get real: marriage, s*x, and family are work—serious, relentless, everyday work.

Nobody likes to admit it, but the fairy-tale version most people buy into is pure fiction. You think it’s about romance, chemistry, and just being “soulmates.” The truth? That’s the honeymoon phase.

Real marriage is a partnership, not a dream sequence, and it’s one you have to build brick by brick. During dating, you don’t fall in love with each other. You get attracted to each other.

Falling in love happens slowly during the first 10 years of marriage. A reason many marriages fail after the official wedding.

Tip of the Day *****on

Work-life balance is a myth. Focus on work-life integration, instead.

You’ve been fed this idea that if you just create the right policies, give enough flexibility, and throw in some wellness programs, more pay, everyone will magically strike this perfect balance between their job and their personal life. It’s nonsense.

When you pay more money to unmotivated staff you get unmotivated staff earning a lot of money!

Work-life balance doesn’t exist —not in the way most people imagine it. Life is messy, and so is work. Sometimes work demands more, and sometimes life demands more. You don’t achieve balance by rigidly separating the two, you achieve success by integrating them in a way that works for each individual. Focus on work-life integration. How do you create flexibility in your staff work schedules so they integrate the two? If your staff needs to visit their child at school on Tuesday morning for a talent show, let them do it! Keeping them at work because of your archaic policy of 8-5 pm does more harm to their wellbeing than allowing them a morning off for a great moment with their children. When they return, they will concentrate. That is the essence of work-life integration.

Life is a journey, much like traveling—lots of coming and going. Since morning, it was a rush through, eager to reach the next destination, then we arrived at DBX and as I waited to connect with so many other passengers I realized the real magic lies in pausing. While young, I used to think travelling is a privilege, something special for special people. Far from it. Travelling is suffering. So many people are sleeping while seated. Connecting flights are the worst.

True, when you travel you expand your horizons. See and believe that the world has long moved on. I think that is the benefit of the price we pay to travel in terms of sleepless nights, poor eating habits and stress.

Life isn’t just about the destinations we reach, but the memories we gather along the way. So, take your time, enjoy each step, and let the journey unfold as you take notes.

After all, life’s beauty is found in the moments between the going and coming.

I go to the school where I take my child and they tell me, "He does not take instructions. Do discipline him."

Inside my mind, I was like, "This ma' boy is great. Keep it up. Not all instructions are sensible."

Babies are great because they have an active bull*hit detector. Do activate yours too.

2/2 When I showed him the calculations on my laptop, he was visibly shocked. After he regained his composure, I explained why he still owed UGX 8.2 million despite making regular payments for two years.

The monthly repayment schedule revealed the harsh reality: the total interest on his UGX 9 million loan amounted to UGX 34 million. Out of his UGX 909,373 monthly payment, only UGX 9,373 went towards the principal. Over two years, he had paid UGX 20,995,446 in interest and only UGX 829,514 on the principal.

I advised my friend to find a way out of this exploitative contract. Since his car, bought with the loan shark's money, had been impounded, he should consider letting them keep it. I also recommended that he gather all related documents, including the loan agreement, official repayment schedule, and proof of payments, so we could seek legal redress for unfair business practices. The terms of his loan were not just unfavorable; they were predatory and illegal.

How can such practices be allowed to flourish unchecked? A 10% monthly interest rate, translating to 120% annually, is outrageous and should be illegal. I did a quick comparative computation using a 24% interest rate from an expensive bank, and the total interest rate would be just Ugx. 5m, making the total cost of the loan to be just Ugx. 14m.

Entrepreneurs and businesspeople must always consult with lawyers and accountants before committing to any financial agreements. While their services may seem costly, they can save you years of stress and financial loss in the long run. Trust the experts, and they will help you achieve your dreams.

1/2 Beware the Loan Sharks Lurking in the Shadows at Noon!

In today's hard times, the allure of quick cash can be tempting, but it's crucial to steer clear of loan sharks. These predatory lenders are not here to help; they are here to exploit and devastate. When you need financial assistance, seek reputable sources like licensed banks or microfinance companies. Loan sharks and most informal money lenders are dangerous and can ruin your life.

Just yesterday, a friend of mine found himself in a dire situation. He had borrowed UGX 9,000,000 from a loan shark to purchase a car for his business. Unfortunately, he fell behind on his payments, and after two months of delinquency, the lender impounded his vehicle. To get his car back, the lender demanded a deposit of at least UGX 4 million.

These days, I am cautious about getting involved in others' financial woes. I invited my friend for a detailed discussion to understand his predicament better.
He revealed that on January 10, 2022, he had taken out a four-year loan at an astronomical interest rate of 10% per month. Two years into the loan, he still owed UGX 8.2 million of the principal, having repaid only UGX 800,000. Desperate, he sought my help to raise UGX 4 million to reclaim his car, declaring that I was his only hope.

It frustrates me when people expect me to solve problems they have created for themselves. I told him, “Don’t look to me for solutions to issues you’ve caused. You should have considered the consequences earlier.” During our conversation, I remembered him mentioning the 10% monthly interest rate. I asked him, “Where is your loan repayment schedule?”

To my surprise, he didn't have one. I instructed him to contact the lender and request it immediately. He called, only to be told that the lender couldn't provide the schedule. I advised him to insist on collecting it in person, but they refused. Consequently, I downloaded a loan repayment schedule template online and calculated his repayments to help him understand the gravity of his situation. I lived with Grandpa, and he always encouraged me to have one or two serious friends and to help strangers. He loved to say, "You never know who will answer and respond in time to your alarm" and "The child not embraced by the village burns it down to feel its warmth."

Be good to each other. Reach out and support one another. A visit to your friend's home is more important than a phone call. How can you pretend to be someone's friend, when you do not even know their home?

Practical tips to stay safe online.

1/8 Use Strong, Unique Passwords
Tech folks love to say: "Passwords are like underwear -- don’t let people see it, change it very often, and do not share it with strangers."

A strong password is harder for attackers to guess or crack using automated tools. Instead of a fool's password like, "password123", be innovative. Create a password like "P@ssw0rd!23". You notice the capital P, the @ for a, capital 0, and ! for 1. These random special characters make a rather simple password uncrackable.

For ideas on password generation, check out, https://lastpass.com/features/password-generator.

Once I was approached to help a victim to online identity theft I will call Jane. She had used "jane123jane" for all her social media and email accounts. She woke up to several missed calls from friends and relatives worried about her wellbeing. Her email was hacked because the password was too easy to guess. The hacker sent bulk emails to all her contacts asking for support, that she had been involved in an accident and they had taken her to hospital, she needed money so they would work on her. It was urgent, and that a well wisher was helping follow up since she was unwell. The criminals had found an accomplish in Uganda whose unregistered SIM card they were using to receive any help! Cyber criminals are so organized and structured in ways you cannot believe.

Thanks to our intervention, we were able to follow clear communication protocols -- report a police case, inform family and friends, report the matter to the concerned social media and cloud email providers -- as well as conduct offensive recovery of the email.

The experience taught Jane the importance of using unique and strong passwords for each account, significantly reducing her risk of being hacked again.
