The 80/20 Rule: Optimizing strengths and limiting inefficiencies in your organization

You have probably come across the Pareto principle commonly known as the 80/20 rule. It is an observation which suggests that 80% of effects come from 20% of the causes.

The principle comes from Italian economist, Vilfredo Pareto who, in the early 20th century, observed that 80% of Italy's land was owned by 20% of the population.

The 80/20 rule has got various applications cutting across multiple disciplines including business, economics and sociology.

In business for example, the Pareto principle is used to prioritize efforts and manage resource allocation.

It suggests that 80% of a company's profits come from 20% of its customers and that 80% of a company's problems are caused by 20% of its products or services.

For example, sales managers may find that a small percentage of their sales executives generate a significant portion of the company's revenue. In other words, 20% of the sales team might be responsible for 80% of the total sales.

By recognizing this, managers can focus their resources on these high-performing individuals by providing them with additional support, training and resources to help them continue to succeed.

Additionally, they can work to identify potential areas for improvement for the remaining 80% of the sales team to help them increase their performance and contribute to the overall success of the organization.

Another example could be related to product development.

A company might find that 20% of its products generate 80% of its revenue. By understanding this principle, the company can then focus on improving the quality and profitability of its top-performing products while either discontinuing or making improvements to the remaining 80% of the products that are not as successful.

Overall, the Pareto Principle can be a useful tool for organizations to identify where they should focus their efforts and resources to maximize their results and achieve their goals more efficiently.

"Behavior that is recognized and rewarded is often repeated": Why Employee Rewards and Recognition Programs are a Smart Investment for Your Organization

As a top executive, you know that your employees are one of your organization's most valuable assets. Keeping them motivated, engaged and committed is critical to your success. One effective way to achieve this is through employee rewards and recognition programs.

Studies show that such programs can have a significant impact on employee engagement and retention, leading to increased productivity, job satisfaction and overall performance.

They can also create a positive workplace culture that fosters teamwork, collaboration and a sense of community.

But what exactly are employee rewards and recognition programs?

They can take many forms, from monetary bonuses and gift cards to public recognition and extra time off. The key is to find the right mix of rewards and recognition that resonates with your employees and aligns with your organization's values and goals.

Here are just a few of the benefits your organization can expect from implementing such programs:

🏅 Increased employee engagement: When employees feel recognized and valued for their contributions, they are more likely to be engaged and committed to their work. This can lead to improved productivity, job satisfaction and overall performance.

🏅 Improved retention: Employees who feel appreciated are more likely to stay with an organization, reducing turnover and associated costs such as recruiting and training new employees.

🏅 Positive workplace culture: Rewards and recognition programs can create a positive workplace culture that fosters teamwork, collaboration, and a sense of community.

🏅 Increased motivation: Rewards and recognition can be powerful motivators for employees, leading to increased effort and better results.

🏅 Improved customer service: When employees feel valued and motivated, they are more likely to provide better customer service, leading to higher levels of customer satisfaction and loyalty.

🏅 Improved bottom line: A positive workplace culture, increased employee engagement and improved customer service can all contribute to a healthier bottom line for the organization.

Rewards and recognition programs can therefore be a smart investment for organizations looking to improve employee satisfaction, retention and performance while also enhancing their bottom line.

By creating a culture of recognition and appreciation, you can ensure that your organization attracts and retains top talent, while also delivering better results for your customers and stakeholders.

Once upon a time, there was a slow and steady tortoise who owned a successful but modest business selling sea shells. One day, a speedy hare came to town and opened up a rival shop selling shells that were faster to produce and cheaper to buy.

The tortoise was worried at first, but instead of giving up, he decided to use his agility to his advantage. He quickly adapted his business model and started offering personalized and customizable shells that the hare couldn't match.

As the hare continued to rely on his speed, the tortoise's business began to thrive. Customers appreciated the extra care and attention that the tortoise put into each order and soon his business was booming.

The moral of the story? In the world of business, speed and agility are important, but they're not everything. Sometimes it's better to slow down and focus on delivering quality, personalized service that sets you apart from the competition.

Identifying and meeting customer needs is an important process.

Customers face daily obstacles or challenges that prevent them from reaching their goals, and it's up to businesses to identify these needs and find creative solutions to meet them.

Businesses that are quick to identify customer needs and adapt to changing situations are more likely to succeed. By offering innovative solutions that meet the specific needs of their customers, businesses can build strong relationships and earn customer loyalty.

Negative feedback, poor reviews, harsh criticism; nearly everybody tries to avoid these but astute entrepreneurs have learnt that these seemingly distasteful sentiments command great potential.

It is only human for feelings to initially get hurt but you should try and see feedback for what it truly is; a litmus test that evaluates what's working and what needs tweaking.

In business, as in life, it is rare that you'll get everything right the first time everytime.

Perfection is a shifting illusion and that is why leading companies invest heavily and continuously in Research & Development.

A strategy that worked yesterday may not necessarily work today.

Evaluate what's working and refine that. Determine what's not yet quite hitting the mark and find ways of tweaking it.

Part of the data source critical to making these kinds of decisions is customer feedback. Do not shy aware from it.

Integrate a robust feedback processing mechanism into your CRM infrastructure and see the difference an open mind can do for your business.

Never ever ignore your customer.

The fourth industrial revolution is well and truly with us.

Social Technology, Artificial Intelligence and the internet of things (IoT) is exposing businesses to cross-boarder competition and consumers on a scale previously unimaginable. This market is awake 24/7 and is constantly evolving.

Today's consumer has got access to more information and better choices. The product or service you provide in one location is likely to be available halfway across the world relatively cheaper and of better quality. The question therefore will be how do you compete? What is your unique value proposition? Your competitive advantage?

Efficiency, cost (time and material) and convenience will be key to driving acquisitions and retention. These along with social and environmental responsiveness will dictate the kind of mark you make and the tenure of your average consumer.

To try and keep up using traditional infrastructure, you will need extreme creativity and resilience.

Businesses that fail to innovate and adapt will invariably find themselves on the tail end of growth.

Do not be left behind.

It is sometimes easy to dismiss the little things we do or can do to improve a person's mental state even slightly so as to put them at ease as a first step towards creating a great experience.

Client experience is about creating a better and safe space for the client. It extends beyond technical competence and professional courtesy into simply being human.

This involves treating the other party as you'd want to be treated; showing empathy and compassion as well as being present and attentive. This gives hope even in the most difficult situations and with hope anything is possible. You cannot discount the power of hope.

Yes, good customer experience is about creating a positive lasting memory. It isn't about telling people how awesome you are, or how wonderful your facilities are.

Client experience is about creating stories that do the talking for you! Stories that a client will be proud to share with you and others over and over again.
