17 AGRICULTURAL LAWS TO KNOW

1. Never target high seasons; high seasons come with their own challenges. Be a farmer, not a gambler.

2. Choose at least two main crops and a crop rotation plan. Switching from one crop to another is not directly in your pocket.

3. Plan your farm and always have crops at different stages of age to ensure a constant supply.

4. No crop is profitable in itself; just master the advantages and disadvantages of a particular crop.

5. Having a lot is not a guarantee for successful farming.

6. Have a spraying and fertilizing plan and stick to it.

7. Never follow the advice of agro-veterinarians and agrochemical sales agents. Most of them are salespeople, not agronomists.

8. Try as much as possible to reduce agricultural expenses without compromising the quality of products.

9. Never hold onto a product if it is perishable. Sell it at prevailing prices.

10. Never plant a new seed on a large scale before testing it, unless you have seen it somewhere.

11. Never entrust your million-dollar idea to a farm worker; make sure you are present during critical stages of crop development until commercialization.

12. Never employ a close family member to manage your farm; most of them will let you down.

13. If you are neighboring farmers, plant the same crop.

14. Never apply agricultural information you get online without consulting your agronomist.

15. Always have a farm plan.

16. Old is always good. Most old seed varieties and chemicals will never disappoint you.

DO YOU NEED A LICENSE TO START A BUSINESS AT HOME?

Sande started his business during the COVID lockdown. Before he knew it, his neighbour and their neighbour had also started one. Because business has been good this year, he plans to open up six more businesses for his wives and his ‘side people’ and advertise them on Instagram, Facebook, WhatsApp business, Jumia, Jiji and many other online platforms. If you are like Sande and his neighbours, you are probably thinking of starting your own small ‘side hustle. What do you need to do to run that business at home?

WHAT DOES THE LAW SAY?

Simply, the law (The trade licensing Act) requires you to get permission before being part of certain trade/business activities in a trading centre. This permission is known as a Trade Licence.

This is because there are areas designated by law to be trading areas so that the local authorities (such as the municipal council) can collect taxes and fees from the business activities carried out in those areas. This permission is also given every year, and this means that after a year, you must apply for this license again after fulfilling certain conditions the local authority has set and the payment of a fee.

So, to get this trading licence, you must apply to the local council of the area where your business is located. For example, you can register with the Kampala Capital City Authority if you are in Kampala.

IF I HAVE 10 BRANCHES ALL OVER UGANDA, DOES THAT MEAN I MAY HAVE TO GET DIFFERENT LICENCES?

Yes!!
A trading licence is permission to carry out a trading/ business activity in a specific area and for a specific business. Therefore, if you leave that area and open a branch in another area, you will be in a different trading centre and council and will have to apply to carry out your business in that new area. For example, If your main business location is in Kampala and you have a branch in Gulu, you will also be required to get a trading licence for the trading centre in Gulu Municipal Council.

Robbers enter a house, asks for all the money and valuables.
After they collect what they can, they give the man of the house a gun with instructions to shoot his wife or else he be shot himself.
The man gets the gun, points it at his wife and hesitates.
He is thinking of what he has gone through in life with his wife and how she has suffered and sacrificed for him.
He hands back the gun and says, “I am sorry I can’t do this…
“The boss of the robbers silently grabs the gun from him and passes it on to the wife with the same instruction.
The wife gets the gun and without any single hesitation points to her husband’s head and pulls the trigger.
But at last, the gun had no bullets in it. The robbers get their gun
and walk out of the house laughing.
QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION
1. If you were the man in that house how would you react towards your
wife?
2. If you were the wife, what explanation can you give to your
husband!
3. If you were invited to bring peace between this couples, what advice
would you give?
