Determining the level of groundwater is essential during geotechnical investigations. The presence or absence of groundwater has a significant impact on the shear strength, consolidation, and swelling characteristics of the in-situ soil. One way to measure the water level depth is by using a deep meter.
A deep meter is used to measure the depth of the water table in the borehole with great accuracy. The deep meter uses an electronic sensor to detect changes in the electrical conductivity of the soil, which can indicate the presence of water.
Once the depth of the water table is determined, it is easy to calculate the water level in relation to the ground surface and create a detailed groundwater contour map for the area. This information is crucial for various engineering and environmental applications, including groundwater management, site selection, and the design of foundations and underground structures.
On one of our recent projects (Geotechnical investigations for Acomai Irrigation Scheme Infrastructure and Facilities), it was necessary to determine the level of groundwater.
