Construction of the Akii Bua Stadium in Lira City is already 30% complete and progressing ahead of schedule?
While the official completion date is January 2027, engineers now project that the stadium will be ready by October 2026.
Over 950 workers are employed on the site and more than 90% of them are from Lira and the surrounding districts?
Tha means the stadium is not only rising from local soil but also putting money directly into local homes.
Most of the building materials sand, granite, cement, and steel are sourced locally from suppliers in Lango Sub-region?
Only specialized materials unavailable in Uganda are imported. This “build local, buy local” policy keeps jobs and cash circulating right here in the community.
The project comes with a 60-kilometre access road linking Lira to Gulu Airport through Oboke and Bobi, plus feeder roads around the stadium?
This road network will make travel, tourism, and trade easier across the entire sub-region.
When completed, Akii Bua Stadium will seat 20,000 spectators, making it one of the largest and most modern arenas in northern Uganda?
It will host national sports events, concerts, and cultural festivals, driving hospitality and retail growth in the region.
The stadium is named after John Akii Bua, Uganda’s first Olympic gold medalist, born right here in Lango.
His legacy lives on and today, the new stadium will nurture future stars like footballer Allan Okello and the Lango football team, recent winners of the national “Drum” tournament.
Every match or major event will generate demand for transport, accommodation, food, and entertainment, creating hundreds of new jobs in the hospitality and service industries?
For the first time in history, Lango is getting a world-class stadium built by its own people a symbol of dignity, opportunity, and pride under the NRM’s inclusive development agenda.
