🔥 Fire Safety Reminder from Pontotoc County Central Dispatch

As colder weather sets in, winter dryness can create dangerous conditions for grass, brush, and wildfires. While controlled burns are commonly used for land management and debris cleanup, dry vegetation, low humidity, and changing winds can cause fires to spread rapidly and unexpectedly.

To help protect lives, property, and first responders, we ask community members to use extra caution when burning:

Before You Burn:
• Check current weather conditions, wind speeds, and any burn restrictions or bans
• Choose a safe location away from homes, roadways, and wooded areas
• Have water, shovels, or other fire suppression tools readily available
• Inform Pontotoc County Central Dispatch and others nearby of your planned burn. Call 580-332-4466 to report when you are starting your burn.

During the Burn:
• Never leave a fire unattended, even for a short time
• Continuously monitor wind direction and fire behavior
• Keep the burn small and manageable
• Avoid burning on windy or extremely dry days

After the Burn:
• Fully extinguish the fire with water and stir ashes to ensure nothing remains smoldering
• Continue monitoring the area after the burn is complete
• Remember that embers can reignite hours later

If a fire becomes difficult to control, spreads beyond the intended area, or threatens people or property, call 911 immediately.

Pontotoc County Central Dispatch works closely with our fire departments to respond to fire-related emergencies. Your awareness and responsible actions help reduce unnecessary emergencies and keep our community safe, especially during dry winter conditions.

Thank you for doing your part,
Pontotoc County Central Dispatch

Homer firefighters were committed to fires on Friday for several hours. The first fire was in Kullihoma, the second was in Francis, and the third was a small fire in the Deer Creek neighborhood.

Fire conditions moderate over the weekend, however moderating from critical conditions still leaves us with elevated fire danger, before more critical fire weather returns next week.

Outdoor burning continues to be discouraged. Any uncontrolled fire is an emergency, dial 911!

A concerning wildfire environment is forecast to exist on Friday (3/14) for most of Oklahoma. Fuels have been drying all week under warm temperatures, low humidity, and elevated wind speeds. Friday will be much of the same with 40+ MPH wind gusts, which will create problematic and extreme fire behavior even with recent rainfall.

The US National Weather Service Norman Oklahoma has issued a Red Flag Warning for our area on Friday. Outdoor burning is heavily discouraged. Fire danger will moderate but continue to be elevated over the weekend and into next week.

It is incredibly important to do your part to prevent wildfires! Firefighters are likely to be extremely busy either with fires in their own jurisdictions or on deployments to help other fire departments in the state.

Immediately comply with evacuation notices for your area and be prepared to evacuate in advance. Do not approach active fire scenes or overfly them with drones, as this can hamper firefighting operations.

Any uncontrolled fire is an emergency, dial 911!

Stay safe

Area firefighters have seen an increase in wildland fires and their resistance to control over the weekend. This means that there are more fires, and the fires are requiring more firefighters and more time to contain and extinguish.

Please be cautious with any activities that may start a wildfire. Report controlled burns to Central Dispatch 580-332-4466.

Any uncontrolled fire is an emergency! Dial 911!

Holiday season can be a dangerous time of year if you are not careful with decorations. Here are some tips to help keep your house safe this season:

1. Never connect excessive amounts of electricity-using devices together (light strands) or into the same electrical outlet, and never use heating appliances with power strips.

2. Ensure that heating appliances are at least 3 feet away from combustible materials, including decorations.

3. Portable heating devices should have automatic shut offs that turn them off if they tip over.

4. Don't use lights or other decorations with frayed or damaged electrical connectors.

5. If you are using a real tree for your decorations, ensure that they are kept moist by watering them frequently. Dry trees can quickly catch on fire and spread to the other contents of the room.

6. If candles are a part of your celebration/decoration, consider using battery powered candles where possible. If you are using flame candles, ensure they are kept away from anything that can catch fire, and never leave them unattended. Always extinguish candles before you leave or go to sleep!

As we enter the winter months, cooler weather has started to appear and will become the norm for the next few months. Structure fires become more common in these months due to a multitude of reasons, primarily unsafe heating of the building. Here are a 8 tips to help keep your family warm and safe this winter:

1. Prior to using your fireplace, have a qualified professional clean your chimney. This should be done at least once per year to prevent buildup of soot and other materials that can catch fire and spread to your home

2. Test smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors monthly, and replace their batteries twice per year.

3. Never store hot ashes in a combustible container, near your home, or on the ground near combustible materials.

4. Only heat your home with appliances designed to be used that way. Never use a stove or oven for this purpose!

5. Plug heating appliances directly into a wall and never into a power strip. Also, only use one heater per wall outlet.

6. Any time you are using a heating appliance that produces carbon monoxide, ensure that you have a working carbon monoxide detector installed.

7. Plan and practice safety drills where every member of the family evacuates to a safe location outside of the home in case of fire or smoke.

8. Never use a generator inside your home! Always use generators outside in well-ventilated areas to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.

Stay safe!
