When we go into an attic for a wildlife inspection, we never know exactly what we’re going to find. What may look like a simple animal issue from the outside can turn into a much bigger problem once we get up there.

A THOROUGH WILDLIFE INSPECTION CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE!

We recently headed out to a customer’s home in Perkins, OK for a mice and rat inspection. What we found is a great example of why simply setting traps isn’t always enough.

During our inspection, we identified several potential entry points, including:

Small and large cracks in the foundation
Openings around roof transitions
An attic vent with no screen
Multiple areas that could allow rodents to enter the home

If you only address the areas where you see activity, you may be missing the actual way animals are getting inside.

BEE & HIVE REMOVAL!

We recently had the opportunity to help some friends with a bee and hive removal after an old hive had been established inside a large tree.

Bee colonies can settle in trees, wall voids, attics, and other hidden areas. Even when a hive is no longer active, old honeycomb and nesting material can still create problems and attract other pests.

We were glad to lend a hand by safely removing the old hive and cleaning up the area. Helping one another protect our homes and properties is what community is all about.

MOLE DAMAGE vs. ARMADILLO DAMAGE — CAN YOU TELL THE DIFFERENCE?

Not all digging damage in your yard is caused by the same animal! One of the most common questions we get is, “Is this a mole or an armadillo?”

MOLE DAMAGE:
Moles spend most of their time underground searching for insects and earthworms. Their damage is usually characterized by:
• Raised, winding ridges across the lawn
• Small mounds of loose soil
• Tunnels just beneath the surface
• Damage that can appear throughout the yard
• Little to no large, open digging holes

ARMADILLO DAMAGE:
Armadillos are surface diggers and are looking for grubs, insects, and other food in the soil. Their damage is typically:
• Small, cone-shaped holes
• Larger, deeper holes dug into the ground
• Multiple holes scattered across the yard
• Areas of freshly disturbed soil
• Damage around trees, flower beds, mulch, and well-watered lawns

The big difference:
Moles tunnel through the soil. Armadillos dig down into the soil.

Ever wonder why you start seeing more armadillos around Oklahoma during certain times of the year? Here’s a quick look at their life cycle!

Armadillo Life Cycle & Breeding Season in Oklahoma

Breeding: Nine-banded armadillos typically breed during the summer months. After mating, the female has a unique delayed implantation period, meaning the fertilized egg can remain dormant before development begins.

Birth: After roughly 4 months of actual development, the female typically gives birth to four identical pups. They are born with soft, leathery skin and remain with the mother while they grow.

Growing Up: Young armadillos begin foraging with their mother and become increasingly independent. By around 6 months old, they are generally capable of living on their own.

Adult Life: Adult armadillos spend much of their time searching for insects, grubs, worms and other food by digging through soil. In Oklahoma, this digging can turn a well-maintained lawn into a mess overnight!

Why you may be seeing more right now: During hot and dry conditions, armadillos are often attracted to well-watered lawns, gardens and landscaped areas where the soil is easier to dig and food can be easier to find.

If armadillos are tearing up your yard, don’t just fill the holes and hope they leave. The key is figuring out why they’re using your property and how they’re getting in.

ARMADILLO PROBLEMS IN OKC?

We recently helped a customer in Oklahoma City who was dealing with armadillos tearing up their yard.

To figure out exactly what was going on, we set up wildlife cameras and traps around the property. The cameras caught the armadillo in action, showing us exactly where it was coming in and where it was spending its time. From there, we strategically placed our traps—and we got the culprit!

With the weather being hot and dry, armadillos are often drawn to well-manicured, watered lawns. These areas can provide softer soil that is much easier for them to dig through while they search for insects, grubs, and other food.

If you’re finding holes, fresh dirt, or torn-up sections of your lawn, you may have an armadillo working the property at night.

4 Opossums Caught in Perkins, OK!

We recently got called out to a property in Perkins, Oklahoma, where the homeowners were having trouble with predators getting into their chicken pen and helping themselves to the chicken feed and the chickens themselves!

After setting traps and monitoring the area, we ended up catching 4 opossums and 7 raccoons!

One of the biggest things we recommend to homeowners with chickens is managing access to the food source. If the chicken coop and pen are left open all day and night with feed available, it can quickly become an easy buffet for opossums, raccoons, skunks, and other wildlife.

-Keep your chicken coop and pen secured when you’re not actively using it
-Feed chickens at specific times rather than leaving feed out around the clock
-Remove leftover feed when possible
-Keep the area around the coop clean and free of attractants

Wildlife management isn’t always just about trapping the animal — sometimes it’s about changing what is attracting them in the first place!
