Here at Eastern Forest Management, we love our pines 🌲

Test your skills with this game from the North Carolina Forestry Association—can you identify all 4 pine cones?

Drop your answers in the comments 👇

How well do you really know your North Carolina pines? 🌲🤔

It’s easy to overlook what’s on the forest floor, but every pinecone tells a story! Can you identify these four common Southern species just by their cones?

Test your knowledge:

1️⃣ Longleaf Pine (The big, heavy, thick-scaled classic)
2️⃣ Loblolly Pine (The medium-sized, prickly "common" cone)
3️⃣ Slash Pine (The shiny, smooth-scaled pinecone)
4️⃣ Shortleaf Pine (The smallest of the bunch!)

How many did you get right? Let us know in the comments! 👇

It’s tempting to delay thinning and hope the market turns in your favor. But this stump is a good reminder of why we encourage landowners to thin on time—missed timing can mean missed value and lost stand quality.

Folks often see forestry activity and assume those trees are headed somewhere far away.

But the trees you plant and manage can come full circle—right back to your own community.

This table started as a tree grown near our hometown, cut at Roseburg, then processed through mills in our region before ending up in a park in Edenton, where it's being used exactly how it should be.

Whoever planted that tree likely never sat at this table—but someone else’s kid gets to.

That’s the beauty of working forests.
Grown, harvested, replanted… and passed on.

Not for us—but for the next generation.

Shoutout to some of the local mills that keep this cycle moving: West Fraser, Weyerhaeuser, binderholz, J.W. Jones Lumber Co., Franklin Lumber, Ashton Lewis Lumber Company.

Found this hiding out during a second thinning in Como (shoutout Joe Davison👀).

Looks delicate, but it’s picky—prefers mesic soils and gets accustomed to local fungal networks. Translation: it's beautiful but really tricky to transplant.

⭐ Alright… who knows what it is?
