Good forest management grows more than trees—it creates wildlife habitat. 🌲

When foresters talk about prescribed burning, planting, and thinning, people often think first about timber production and profitability. But these practices serve another equally important purpose: supporting wildlife.

One of our clients in Northampton County is using these tools to manage specifically for quail, and it’s rewarding to see those efforts pay off. There has been a noticeable increase in the quail population, while the timber continues to grow healthy and strong.

Healthy trees, thriving quail, and a happy landowner—that’s forest management at its best!

Forestry Facts with Joe | Part 2

In Part 1, Joe showed how an increment borer can be used to determine a tree's age.

Now you can see why that's important.

These two trees look like they're completely different ages, but they're not. You can't accurately judge a tree's age just by looking at it from the outside. Competition for sunlight, water, and nutrients can dramatically affect how a tree grows.

It's another reminder that proper thinning is critical to maintaining a healthy, productive forest.

🔥 Prescribed burning is one of the most effective tools in forest management—but a successful burn depends on much more than simply lighting a fire.

One key factor is duff, the layer of decomposing leaves, pine needles, and organic matter covering the forest floor. Understanding duff helps protect tree roots, manage fire intensity, and achieve the objectives of a prescribed burn.

That's why having an NCFS Certified Burner as part of your forest management team is so important. Experience, planning, and understanding site conditions help ensure burns are conducted safely and effectively while meeting your long-term management goals.
