Getting into retail is not the finish line.
It is the moment the next job begins.
That is one of the clearest lessons Heather Roberts shared with me in this new episode of The Brand Blueprint.
Heather is the founder and CEO of Mom Bomb, a bath and body brand built around a larger mission: helping mothers and families regain stability during crisis. The company says 100% of its profits support that work through its sister nonprofit.
What makes Heather's story valuable is that she does not romanticize the build.
She talks about the eight years behind the momentum. The years when almost nothing sold. The contract-manufacturing relationships she had to learn how to manage. The retail display that was too heavy to deliver and could have created a $50,000 loss. The package that won an award but still did not generate the sell-through a buyer needed.
She also talks about the harder strategic question:
How do you build a company that can attract resources, expand through retail, reward the people who create value, and still protect the mission from the wrong capital or governance structure?
Our conversation covers:
• Why mission has to be built into the operating model
• What founders should ask contract manufacturers before signing
• How payment terms and inventory exposure can help or hurt
• Why distribution without awareness is not enough
• How Heather uses targeted local marketing to support retail doors
• When buyer feedback should drive a packaging change
• Why she is exploring non-dilutive and alternative capital first
• How advisory equity, vesting, and written agreements protect the company
• Why useful relationships often begin with service, not an ask
Heather has a line in the episode that captures the founder reality perfectly:
"Nothing is going to out-beat work and strategy. The end."
If you are building a consumer brand, preparing for retail, or trying to grow without surrendering the reason you started, this conversation is worth your time.
