After an arctic blast swept through his area, Pastor Steven Jones bundled up and went to check on his church building. All was well in the main facility, but when he opened the door to the fellowship hall, he heard the sound of flowing water. His heart sank.

I had a client contact me after a severe storm passed through Friday evening. Thankfully, nobody was injured, but there was some property damage. The conversation turned to discussing damage to a visitor's car that was parked on the property that was hit by flying debris from their elaborate swing set that had been tossed in the wind. The coverage of the car falls under the owners auto policy, assuming they have comprehensive coverage.

Tip 1: Do not announce via social media that you are out of town. Also refrain from posting pictures that suggest you're not at home.
Tip 2: Post a sign in your front yard from your alarm company, showing that your home is being monitored.
Tip 3: Keep your exterior lights on in the front and back yard to deter burglars.
Tip 4: Tell your neighbors when you will be out of town so they can be on the lookout for anything suspicious.
Tip 5: Don't leave valuables in places where they can be seen from the outside (close to windows, etc.).

Did you change your smoke detector batteries Saturday night? Even I, an insurance guy that has see the aftermath of a friend's home, family, and life changed forever failed to do so but I plan to pick up batteries this evening. Remember, even if you have a home that has them directly wired, there are still 9 volt batteries inside to maintain. DO IT TODAY!
