The Crystal Hultz case is a big win, actually a Major Win for people with fibromyalgia and other “invisible illnesses.” The court ruled that Social Security must take your symptoms and daily struggles seriously — not just rely on medical tests. This decision helps protect people whose disabilities are real but hard to measure. If you or someone you love was denied benefits for an invisible condition, remember: your story and your voice matter.

Their complaints are often brushed aside, but fibromyalgia sufferers see some hope in a court ruling that Social Security officials were wrong to discount an Anne Arundel County woman's description of the suffering the condition caused her.

THINGS TO REMEMBER:

1. Your ultimate goal with the disability application is to prove that you have a disability and that it makes you unable to work. If you’re over age 50, you need to prove you can no longer do the type of work you’ve done in the past. If you’re under age 50, you must verify that your disability prevents you from doing any work.

2. Not everything about your life or disability is included in your benefits application

3. Not all records are received by your disability examiner reviewing your claim

4. Not every disability, symptom, or health condition is relevant to the Social Security Administration (SSA)

5. When you explain your work or income history, remember that the SSA only tries to understand whether your disability prevents you from working

I am deeply grateful to God, my family, and my church for their unwavering support throughout my cancer journey. Initially, I dismissed the lump in my breast as a lingering injury. However, a mammogram revealed my worst fear. By the grace of God, I am a breast cancer survivor and metastatic breast cancer survivor.

Social Security Administration manages two programs that provide financial support to people with disabilities: Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) program and the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) program. SSDI provides benefits to people who have developed a disability or who are blind. SSA considers you to have a qualifying disability under our rules if all the following are true: 1. You cannot do work at the substantial gainful activity (SGA) level because of your severe medical condition. 2. You cannot do work you did previously or adjust to other work because of your severe medical condition. 3. Your condition has lasted or is expected to last for at least 1 year or to result in death.

September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month.

If you suffer from Hemolytic Anemias, like Sickle Cell Disease and Thalassemia, you may qualify for SSA benefits if:

You have painful crises requiring intravenous or intramuscular narcotic pain relievers at least 6 times a year, with at least 30 days between each crisis.
OR
You need to be hospitalized at least 3 times a year due to complications, with each stay lasting at least 48 hours and at least 30 days apart.
OR
Your hemoglobin levels drop to 7.0 g/dL or less at least 3 times a year, with at least 30 days between each low measurement.
OR
You have beta Thalassemia major and require blood transfusions every 6 weeks to live.
