The University of Tennessee Institute of Agriculture (UTIA) AgResearch, in partnership with the Enterprise Sensor Systems LLC (EnSenSys) of Alamo, Tennessee, has been awarded a grant through the AI TechX Seed Fund to collaborate on “Rapid Identification of Cattle with Infectious Diseases Using AI and Hyperspectral Imaging.” The award, announced on June 11, 2025, will run from July 1, 2025, through June 30, 2026.

AI TechX is an initiative of AI Tennessee, which aims to accelerate the development and real-world application of artificial intelligence through academic-industry collaboration. The AI TechX Seed Fund specifically supports efforts to build high-impact, interdisciplinary research teams that tackle industrial challenges through innovative AI-driven solutions.

The funded project will expand EnSenSys’s ESS Protect patented technology—originally developed to detect viral signatures in human breath—to detect viral signatures in animals. ESS Protect – Animal, will offer rapid, non-invasive, and contactless screening for bovine respiratory disease (BRD) using hyperspectral imaging and advanced machine learning.

The research team includes UT faculty members and EnSenSys leadership and subject matter experts. Leveraging hyperspectral data from a 2024 field study at the UTIA Middle Tennessee AgResearch and Education Center in Spring Hill, Tennessee, and from other collaborations with UT and private industry, they will train AI models capable of detecting disease-specific spectral signatures in bovine breath.

Key outcomes include preliminary design of a field-deployable hyperspectral sensing unit, machine learning models for cattle health status, and a strategy to scale the technology for other livestock and farming environments. Long-term partnership aims to support the establishment of an AgriAI Center of Excellence at UTIA, an innovation hub for integrating AI and data-driven tools into modern farming. The center would equip producers with predictive analytics, automation, and precision technologies to improve productivity, sustainability, and economic resilience across Tennessee agriculture.

Great day in Tennessee Ridge, TN at K&M Veterinary Services working with K&M, Cambridge Technologies, and our sister company, Enterprise Sensor Systems, capturing images of potential diseases in cattle. Special thanks to Dr. Mark Turney for providing the cattle, his cattle handling team, and his state of the art facility. And also to James Buck from Cambridge Technologies for coordinating the entire event. We imaged a total of 31 head as we develop ESS Protect to provide rapid, non-invasive disease scanning for animals.

The Foundation administers funds from donations to the museum that support purchasing artifacts, creating and maintaining exhibits, and other needs. The annual “A Tennessee Waltz” hosted by the Governor and First Lady at the State Capitol raises funds for the Museum; the Foundation also serves as a conduit for other private fund raising efforts.

Ms. Terry’s leadership abilities and excellence in promoting humanitarian-centered economic growth and tourism in her community make her highly qualified for this appointment. She has worked closely with multiple organizations across the state to include, among many others: the Exchange Club—Carl Perkins Centers in Lexington and Jackson; Habitat for Humanity; the Tennessee Arts Commission; Tennesseans for the Arts; Girlfriends of the Heart; the Sue Shelton White Committee; the 917 Society; the Lexington Civic League; the Festival of the Lakes Committee; Caywood School Relay for Life; the Circles of Hope Telethon; the American Heart Association Circle of Red; and the Tennessee Immigrant and Minority Business Group in Nashville. Ms. Terry’s leadership has been recognized by many other organizations. She was nominated for the Jefferson Award. She received the C.P. Boyd Leadership Award from the WestStar Class of 2006; the 2017 Sterling Award of “20 Most Influential Women in West Tennessee”; Leadership Henderson County; and the West Star Alumni Council. Terry has also been recognized for the U.S. President's Volunteer Service Award for her commitment to strengthening our nation and communities through her volunteer service.

Ms. Terry represents Farmspace at events with regional policy makers and leaders as well as in informational and educational presentations to groups such as farmers, professional clubs, universities, and STEAM courses across the state.
