This Black Business Month, we are taking a look back at where Harkness Consulting Solutions started and how far the vision has grown.

Founded in 2020 by Melody Harkness Mobele at just 29 years old, HCS began during a period of tremendous uncertainty. What started as a boutique consulting firm focused on workplace culture and DEI grew organically as clients brought new challenges to the table and trusted us to help solve them.

Our earliest clients were women who took a chance on a new Black woman owned business. Those opportunities opened the door for HCS to expand into strategic planning, organizational and operational consulting, change management, leadership and workforce development, business consulting, public policy, and government services.

Six years later, HCS is a New York State certified Minority and Women Owned Business Enterprise working with government agencies, nonprofits, businesses, and community organizations. Along the way, we have remained committed to creating opportunities for others through internships, mentorship, scholarships, partnerships, subcontracting, and community investment.

Our history is still being written.

As we celebrate Black Business Month, we honor the clients who gave us an opportunity, the partners who have grown alongside us, and the communities that continue to trust us with work that matters.

The services have expanded. The reach has grown. But the mission remains the same: empower leaders, connect communities, enhance organizational health, and support long term business sustainability.

It was great to see Virginia Rawlins and Building Blocks Together Dev Corp. in action—educating the community in real time, connecting directly with community members, and creating space for individuals to learn, engage, and access valuable resources.

This is what community-centered economic development looks like: meeting people where they are, sharing knowledge, and helping entrepreneurs turn ideas into opportunities.
