Jeff draws on his background in theater production when approaching his shop, after all, the whole world is a stage, right? He sees his customers as the audience, “you must keep them entertained!” He says it must be working because they are in their 16th year in business.

Jeff tells us that people often assume his store is a chain because of their branding and the quality of his bags -- shout out to Specialty Box & Packaging and his branding team for making him look so good! He says he has been with SBP for 15 out of the 16 years he has been in business, so naturally Emmalyn asks how he found us. Jeff says he thinks a catalog ended up in his hands somehow -- someone locally had one and it made its way to him. He called us and started the process. He may not remember the details of our introduction, but he is thrilled to be in a 16 year relationship with us! He even gets a little jealous of other projects we do for folks in town. Hey Jeff, don’t worry, we really like you too!

Jeff started working for another retailer in town and quickly noticed that all of the customers were asking for the same few items that no one in town was yet selling. He found his niche! Naturally we assumed that meant people were asking for novelty socks, but Jeff says they really wanted “a wider selection of bathing suits, better quality sandals, and higher quality resort wear, you know, sweatshirts and T-shirts -- and then to make the place fun and exciting I started bringing in the novelties, and the books, and the games and the rubber chickens!”

Full disclosure, the rubber chicken was the FIRST thing Emmalyn grabbed when we walked in -- photo evidence submitted.

We asked Jeff, “what is your story? How did you get here?” Jeff exclaims loudly, “OH, the things we do for love!” He tells us a little about his background -- theater production -- and how after spending a summer in Cape Cod, a resort town, he realized that he wanted to live somewhere that had the same strong feeling of community. “There is a collective purpose for the people who live and work in a vacation town; tourists! You know, you kind of rise and fall together. I really liked the idea of living and working in a resort community, and I always wanted to be in business for myself.”

He thought at 11, when his parents asked him what he wanted to be when he grew up, that his future held something more like a Xanadu style roller disco, but he is so thrilled to have ended up where he did.

Jeff noticed a lot of men sitting on the benches outside of these lady centric shops and realized that two things were happening; first, the men were bored and restless, and second (and maybe most important) “it reduced the amount of time women had to shop in the stores where they wanted to shop.” So he thought if he could keep the men occupied with fun and cheeky things to look at, their significant others would have more time to shop as well.

Jeff laughs and exclaims, “let’s be honest! The women are making most of the shopping decisions, and a woman can’t pick out a bathing suit as quickly as a man can!”

This week we’ll be introducing you to Happy Jack’s, a colorful and fun shop in Bolton Landing, NY, in the heart of the vacation town. The store is the perfect reflection of its owner, Jeff Strief, who is also colorful and fun! His favorite line of products come from Blue Q -- funny socks, pot holders and a line of personal care products with a few names we can’t list here...let’s just say if you are offended by foul language you may want to skip visiting their site. Jeff’s customers, however, love the spicy content of their aprons, totes and gum! He has been working with them almost since the beginning and says, “they give the store a very unique kind of flair!"

Happy Jack's is closed for the season, but Jeff's story is bound to make you want to visit as soon as they reopen!

Over the last few days we have introduced you to one of our amazing Specialty Box customers, Clint from the Silver Parrot. Of course we had to know what his favorite part of working with Specialty Box is, to which Clint firmly exclaimed, “because you’re PERFECT!”
