Our advisor, Tom Reynolds, provided exceptional guidance and expertise throughout the entire process of launching The Agave Cantina. With his help, we were able to develop a comprehensive business plan and detailed financial projections that gave us a solid foundation to move forward with confidence. In January 2023, entrepreneur Colleen Jones connected with the NY Capital Region SBDC to explore opening a café in her Adirondack community. She envisioned a welcoming gathering place offering coffee, tea, pastries, and light fare for both local residents and seasonal visitors.

After acquiring a commercial building in Wells, New York, Colleen continued to work with the SBDC and Business Advisor Jennifer Kilcoyne on business planning, financial projections, funding, operations, and other key steps to move the concept forward. Their work helped secure funding through a Microenterprise Grant and prepare the business for launch.

Uncle Carl's Coffee opened in June 2024, just in time for the summer tourist season. Reflecting on her experience, Colleen shared that working with the SBDC not only helped her develop her business plan but also gave her a better understanding of what she would need as a small business owner. Having that plan in place allowed her to feel more prepared when seeking financing and better understand the costs and nuances of running a business.

Today, Uncle Carl’s Coffee offers coffee, tea, pastries, light savory options, and locally sourced items while providing a welcoming space for community members and seasonal travelers alike.

This National Donut Day, we're highlighting a small business helping create connections, conversation, and community in the Adirondacks. 🍩

A 2024 Capital One small business survey found that over half of small business owners surveyed said their role caused them stress over the past year, while more than a third reported mental exhaustion. On the positive side, over 90% said they remain optimistic and believe problems can be solved.

If that optimism feels harder to reach some days, support can look like asking for help. You don’t have to do everything alone.
