National Reconciliation Week is here.

From 27 May – 3 June, let’s move beyond words and into action — because allyship is shown through behaviour, accountability and how we show up every day.

A big part of the conversations I’ve been having through the Beyond Words sessions is that reconciliation can’t just live in statements or one-off moments. It needs to be visible in workplaces, schools, sport and community.

I’ll be encouraging my networks to download and display the resources at home, work and school. Small actions create bigger shifts.

Honored to have been part of the 2024 Distinguished Humphrey Fellowship Program on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples at the University of Washington. Meeting 19 Indigenous Fellows from 14 different countries and 7 states was truly an incredible experience. Grateful for the opportunity to engage with amazing Indigenous Leaders and their communities.

Blakbone Sistahood is proud to announce the creation of 7 international procurement opportunities for 7 Indigenous Speakers from 5 Different Nations across Australia.

We had the honour of participating in Grand Entry, hosting 2 speaking panels, and facilitating an open discussion with the Miss Indian World contestants at The Gathering of Nations in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

This unique event brings together thousands of the best Indigenous dancers, drummers, musicians, equestrians, artisans, and craftspeople from the United States and Canada at Expo New Mexico for North America’s largest powwow.

Today was my first day of my Distinguished Humphrey Fellowship Program: Rights if Indigenous Peoples at the University of Washington.

Getting to explore Seattle again is amazing but to do it with 19 other Fellows from 14 different countries. We share so many similarities as Nations Peoples despite our various mother lands.

Our welcome luncheon in the First Nations house- Intellectual House was definitely a highlight today. Would an amazing variety of Faculty and Alumni joining us.

So many other amazing experiences today but I will share them as their own posts with information on the wonderful guest lecturers.

I am truely grateful for this experience already and it is only day one.

We are excited to share our journey as Australian Delegates at the Gathering of Nations Powwow in Albuquerque, New Mexico! From April 24th to April 28th, we immersed ourselves in the rich traditions and heritage of Native American cultures. Our itinerary was carefully curated to focus on Indigenous and Native identities, storytelling, community engagement, and leadership roles in contemporary life.

Throughout the week, we had the privilege of experiencing a wide range of engaging activities and events. We had the opportunity to attend the Miss Indian World Traditional Talent Presentations, where young Indigenous women competed for the prestigious title of Miss Indian World, representing Native American, Indigenous, and First Nations Tribal Cultures across the globe. We also participated in a special panel reserved for Australian delegates, in conversation with the Miss Indian World contestants.

One of the highlights of the week was experiencing the grandeur of the Gathering of Nations Powwow at Expo NM, where we were honoured guests. We witnessed the Grand Entry of Dancers in Tingley Coliseum, and the Horse & Rider Parade. We also had the opportunity to engage in Discussion Forums with panels at the Hispanic Arts Bldg. These panels featured distinguished U.S. representatives, fostering a unique international cultural exchange with Australian First Peoples.

Our journey concluded with the Final Grand Entry, featuring the Crowning of Miss Indian World and the Best of the Best Dance Competitions. We depart Albuquerque with unforgettable memories and enriching experiences from the Gathering of Nations Powwow. We are grateful for the opportunity to have been a part of this cultural exchange and look forward to sharing our experiences with our communities back home.

First Day for our Gathering of Nations Delegation after settling in to our hotel we were picked up by the amazing Aunty Beverly Singer who took us to the Coronado Historic Site and the ruins of Kuaua Pueblo. We walked along the Rio Grande as we took in the majestic views of the Albuquerque scenery and listened to stories and heritage of the site.

We then finished up the days adventures before our first event with lunch at the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center with the beautiful Red Hawk family and the current Miss Indian World Tori McConnell.

We are overwhelmed by the similarities to our new New Mexico family and how welcoming and loved we already feel from everyone we have meet so far. We head back to our hotel to get ready for the Miss Indian World 2024 competition.

Thankyou to everyone who made this week possible.
