New Acting Chekhov class!
Exploring the Acting Methodology of Earle R. Gister Through Scenes from the plays of Anton Chekhov
The late Earle R. Gister, former Associate Dean and Head of Acting at the Yale School of Drama, taught a well-crafted and unique acting methodology. Dr. Joe Alberti worked with Gister in several settings and in several contexts, including the graduate program at the Yale School of Drama. The works of Anton Chekhov were featured heavily in the first year of training, as Gister considered Chekhov’s plays ideal for learning his acting methodology. Chekhov’s characters, skillful use of subtext, and understated writing provide a highly effective context for learning Gister’s acting methodology.

Dates: The course will meet every Saturday from 1/29-3/5, at 10 am-Noon CENTRAL TIME, with 3/5 being the Final Performance of scenes, and invited guests are welcome.
Please message for full information, teacher bios, and more!
Hope to see you there!

Acting Chekhov
Learning the acting methodology of Earle R. Gister through scenes from the plays of Anton Chekhov
Earle R. Gister, former Associate Dean and Head of Acting at the Yale School of Drama, taught a well-crafted and unique acting methodology. Dr. Joseph Alberti worked with Gister in several settings and in several contexts, including in the graduate program at the Yale School of Drama. The works of Anton Chekhov featured heavily in the first year of training, as Gister considered Chekhov’s plays ideal for learning his acting methodology. Chekhov’s characters, skillful use of subtext, and understated writing provide a highly effective context for learning Gister’s acting methodology, which includes his unique principle of action. In this course, we provide the learning environment and coaching to help the participant to embody the principles of Gister’s methodology and learn sensibilities for text analysis consistent with his approach. We also facilitate a solid introduction to the major plays of Chekhov, leading to confidence and facility with approaching these texts for performance.
The course will meet Saturdays, 10 am-Noon Central Time*. The classes will take place via Zoom on consecutive Saturdays except for breaks indicated below. Each participant will work on two scenes over the length of the course, one scene in weeks 1-5 and one scene in weeks 6-10. Weeks 5 and 10 will be the final presentations of the two scenes. Participants will have a different partner for each scene. In addition to Chekhov’s full-length plays, Wild Honey (Platonov), Ivanov, The Seagull, Uncle Vanya, The Three Sisters, The Cherry Orchard, we include two of his farces, The Proposal and The Bear as the texts from which scenes will be chosen. Note that there will be a two-week gap in weeks 1-5 and a two-week gap in weeks 6-10. During these gaps we will conduct private coaching (also via Zoom) at arranged days and times for the scene partners preparing for their final presentations. The meeting dates (all on Saturdays except for the private scene coaching work) are 10 am-noon* but could last up to 15 minutes longer depending on what we are working on in each class. Saturday class meeting dates are:
• 9/25, 10/2, 10/9, 10/16 (Note: two-week gap for coaching) and 10/30 will be the Final Performance for the first set of scenes
• 11/6, 11/13, 11/20 (Note: Thanksgiving break/two-week gap for coaching) 12/4, and 12/11 will be the Final Performance for the second set of scenes
The price of the course is $297. Pay through PayPal, Zelle or Venmo. We are limiting the number of participants to 14, with two interns, as we wish to ensure that each participant gets plenty of time for working on scenes in class. We will accept in order of application and payment.
In Spring of 2022, we are offering another on-line course that will expand the possible play selections for the participants from those of Chekhov into the plays of Henrik Ibsen. For those who wish to advance to the plays of Ibsen, this course is a pre-requisite. Otherwise, new participants without having worked with us previously will focus on the plays of Chekhov in the Spring offering.
If you have questions or concerns, please don’t hesitate to contact us. If you have any accommodation requests, please let us know in advance of the first class so we can best serve you.
