We're excited to welcome Ana Moran to the Sites Planning team! 🎉

Ana brings nearly 15 years of experience in community development, sustainability, housing, and public policy. Her work has focused on helping communities tackle complex challenges through collaboration, thoughtful engagement, and practical solutions that reflect local priorities.

Before joining Sites, Ana worked in advocacy, organizing, and policy development at the local, state, and national levels. Most recently, she contributed to national advocacy efforts with the National Young Farmers Coalition, helping shape conversations around agricultural resilience and the Farm Bill.

At Sites, Ana will support affordable housing, community development, policy planning, and community engagement efforts. She is passionate about strengthening connections between people, places, and the systems that support thriving communities.

Outside of work, Ana runs a community farm, hosts volunteer days, enjoys live music and Latin dance, and loves bringing people together. 🌱

Please join us in giving Ana a warm welcome to Sites!

This May, during Preservation Month, Senior Planner and Project Manager Danielle Wilson participated in Preserving Place: The Santa Fe Continuum, a symposium hosted by the Historic Santa Fe Foundation and the New Mexico History Museum. 🏛️

The symposium explored preservation and its connection to housing, development, adaptive reuse, and designing for New Mexico’s climate. Dani joined Panel 3, Developing and Designing for Community, Culture, and Climate, where she shared lessons from Sites' work in Mesilla and discussed the importance of working with communities to celebrate heritage and culture while addressing future needs.

At Sites, we know that successful preservation starts with listening. By working closely with residents and stakeholders, communities can honor their history, strengthen local identity, and make thoughtful decisions about the future. 🌱

Thank you to the Historic Santa Fe Foundation and the New Mexico History Museum for bringing together so many thoughtful voices to discuss the future of preservation in New Mexico. 🤝

Allison attended the Strong Towns National Gathering in Fayetteville, Arkansas last week. Fayetteville’s investment in core infill and top-tier public facilities made it an amazing Strong Town to experience firsthand. 🌿🏙️

Allison learned about solutions to unmitigated sprawl, vacancy and disinvestment, and the short-term rental housing trap from experts around the country. She looks forward to bringing these perspectives and ideas to Sites’ work in New Mexico. ✨

Yesterday, Felipe attended the New Mexico Water Dialogue in Albuquerque 💧 where leaders from across the state came together to discuss the future of water in New Mexico.

Conversations focused on the ongoing challenges facing communities across the state and the importance of finding a more unified path forward for water management. Discussions touched on New Mexico’s unique history around early 1900s water settlements and the Texas water compact, while also hearing directly from pueblos and tribal community water leaders, acequia managers, and farmers.

A few key takeaways:
• the need for stronger advocacy and public awareness around water scarcity
• better monitoring tools and more accessible data to support planning and decision making
• more opportunities for youth involvement, education, and career pathways in water and environmental fields
• stronger ordinances supporting green stormwater infrastructure and water reuse in the landscape 🌱

There was also a strong focus on creating incentives for developers and property owners to retrofit existing sites and pursue landscape conversions.

Water continues to shape the future of communities across the Southwest, and conversations like these are an important part of building resilience for the years ahead.

Allison and Karina spent a few days in Silver City last week working on the Comprehensive Plan Update, building on the Town’s 2017 plan and getting out into the community to listen.

From tabling at local spots and community centers to hosting a priorities workshop, we heard directly from residents about what they love and where there’s room to grow, including housing, economic opportunity, infrastructure, and more. We also joined Continental Divide Trail Day, talked with locals and visitors, and yes, even llamas!

Silver City’s mix of history, arts, and access to the outdoors makes it a pretty special place, and it shows in how much people care about its future. 🌄

Allie’s back from the National Planning Conference in Detroit, a legacy city navigating disinvestment and reinvestment and a fitting backdrop for conversations happening across planning. It’s always valuable to connect with planners from across the country and see how shared challenges like housing, economic development, and community engagement are approached in different contexts. Glad to bring those perspectives back home to New Mexico. 🌵✨

Learning by doing 🌿

Farrah spent an afternoon recently at the Tijeras Bio-Zone Education Center, teaming up with a student intern to break ground on a mini green stormwater project, laying out basins and a swale the old-school way with a bunyip, pickaxes, shovels, and buckets.

Bonus: lessons in stream health, future restoration, and yes, porcupines in trees!
