🖋️ Notary Tip of the Day

Can a handwritten document be notarized?

Yes — absolutely!

Many people are surprised to learn that a document does not have to be typed to be notarized. In fact, during colonial America and the early years of the United States, most legal documents were handwritten, and notaries routinely notarized them.

Even today, documents such as:
✔️ Contracts
✔️ Powers of Attorney
✔️ Deeds
✔️ Wills (where permitted by state law)
✔️ Personal agreements

…may be handwritten and still be eligible for notarization.

Here’s the important part: A notary is not certifying the contents of the document. Instead, we are verifying the identity of the signer, confirming they are signing willingly, and completing the required notarial act.

As long as the document is complete (with no blank spaces that should be filled in) and otherwise meets your state’s notarial requirements, being handwritten alone does not prevent it from being notarized.

🚨 Important Tax Filing Update – Please Read ASAP 🚨

If your tax return requires mailing (paper filing), this is VERY important:

As of December 14, 2025, the U.S. Postal Service updated its mailing guidelines. A postmark is no longer considered proof of the date your return was mailed.

👉 What does this mean for you?
If your return is mailed and received after the April 15 deadline, it could be considered late—even if your envelope shows an earlier postmark.

💡 Action Needed:
If you must mail your return, I strongly recommend getting it sent out TODAY to help ensure it arrives on time.

⏳ Waiting too long could result in:
• Late filing penalties
• Interest on any balance due

I’ve been seeing this come up a lot lately, so I wanted to share a little insight 💡

In New Mexico, notaries are only allowed to charge a small fee per signature—but mobile notaries are a different story. When someone travels to you, especially across town, you’re also paying for their time, travel, and convenience.

For things like wills, it can also involve additional time and care to make sure everything is executed properly (and sometimes even witnesses).

$200 may feel high, but depending on what’s included, it’s not completely out of the norm for a mobile service.

Always good to ask what’s included so you can compare apples to apples 👍🏽
