Dentistry is a unique environment. The relationship between owner and associate needs to be completely aligned or it will fail. Dentists work in the same office every day, sharing patients, staff, supplies, etc and this arrangement can either be magic or one disagreement away from the associate crashing out. In this clip Eric Burgmaier and Bob Spiel talk about the benefits of having a group model when it comes to dentistry. If we just say No to the DSO and say a resounding Yes to the group model, dentists would be able to work together in a more synergetic focused way. The difference being that a corporation that only cares about numbers rather than patient care would not be calling the shots in the background. We will do a deeper dive into this topic in future episodes.

Why would anyone actually take their money and invest it in alternative investments? This is a really important question, and the answer will depend on the person considering their options. It probably doesn't make sense to take your first $100k and put it into oil & gas because of the extreme illiquidity of the investment. Typically people considering these types of investments have a background in it already, and have the resources necessary to the degree that they are protected whether they have access to that money or not. All investments carry risk, so it's important to weigh what makes sense for your specific investment strategy. There's a reason there is criteria for getting into these alternative investments. The benefits are certainly substantial for the right person who may be looking to offset a heavy tax burden over a period of several years.

On paper selling your private practice to a DSO might look extremely appealing. Why is it then that so many of these deals fail after a year or two? The initial pitch made by the DSO is designed to make it seem like the dentist won the lottery. However when you unpack the deal you start to see the faustian bargain.
