In recent years, the relationship between Teton Ridge and Etalon Diagnostics captured the attention of the Western performance horse industry in a way few partnerships ever have. It
represented a shift in thinking. For generations, this industry has been built on experience and a deep understanding of bloodlines passed down through horsemen and women who dedicated their lives to the way of life that is equine business. This partnership introduced something new into that equation. Data. Not just any data, but genetic insight designed to help learn more about genetic markers that could potentially predict performance, guide breeding decisions, and give owners and breeders another layer of understanding beyond what the eye can see and what a pedigree can suggest.

Series A funding is typically the first significant round of venture capital after a company has proven its concept and is ready to scale. It is designed to accelerate growth, build infrastructure, expand teams, and position a company for long term success. In this case, it signaled that Etalon was not just an idea, but a company believed to be ready for widespread adoption within the equine industry. The collaboration was not a quiet investment sitting in the background. Rather an intentional alignment of resources, technology, and long term strategy.

Data was used to evaluate traits, strengths, and potential compatibility in breeding decisions. Buyers were introduced to genetic profiles alongside traditional genetic marker information. It was an attempt to bridge the gap between what we feel and what we can measure.

For many in the industry, it sparked curiosity. For others, hesitation. Because while the idea of using science to improve outcomes is not new, applying it to something as nuanced as a performance horse raised important questions. Can you truly quantify the intangible super powers of a unicorn... heart, try, and trainability. Can data ever replace the instinct of a seasoned horseman. But it seems they weren't collaborating to replace those things. It was about adding another tool to the toolbox and seeing if it could help stack the odds in a game of teaming up with a 1200lb living breathing partner.

On April 21, 2026, Uecker and Associates, Inc. was engaged as the assignee under an Assignment for the Benefit of Creditors. This legal process, conducted under California Code of Civil Procedure section 493.010, is a structured liquidation where a company assigns its assets to a third party to be sold in order to repay creditors. It is often considered an alternative to bankruptcy but carries the same underlying reality. The business has come to an end.

Creditors were instructed to file claims no later than October 1, 2026 in order to be considered for any potential distribution from the liquidation of assets. Any creditor who fails to submit a claim by that deadline will be permanently barred from receiving payment. The notice also stated that no distributions under fifty dollars would be made unless cumulative amounts exceeded that threshold and that all distributions would be handled on a pro rata basis. Lessors of equipment were advised to retrieve their property immediately, as the assignee does not intend to insure or protect leased assets unless it determines there is an economic benefit in doing so.

The collab had just begun to explore what this technology might offer, the shutdown leaves more questions than answers. It does not necessarily mean the science was flawed, although many equine genetic groups on social media reported false results that did not match university testing results. It does not mean there is no future for genetic testing traits for predictability in performance horses. What it does highlight is the reality that innovation in this industry must do more than be groundbreaking. It must be practical, trusted, and sustainable within a community that values proven results and long term investments over promise.

At the same time, the liquidation does create a level of uncertainty around the broader Teton Ridge brand within the equine space. The recent dispersal of their TR9 equine holdings to refocus on media and technology assets adds another layer to the conversation. Etalon clearly fell under that technology umbrella, which makes its closure more significant than just the loss of a single company. It raises a natural question within the industry about direction and commitment. When a company makes a strategic pivot, especially at this scale, people may begin to wonder what other equine related projects may be reevaluated or withdrawn from in the future.

For those who may be directly impacted, especially clients with pending charges or active accounts, it is important to take action. Be sure to file any applicable claims within the required timeframe and download any testing records or genetic data that may still be accessible. Protecting your information and ensuring your place in the claims process is critical in a fold like this. It will also be interesting to see how organizations like the American Paint Horse Association proceed forward, as Etalon previously served as an official genetics partner.

The ripple effects of this closure may extend further than many initially realize, influencing not only individual programs but also larger industry partnerships and the future direction of equine genetic services.

A Drug for PSSM?

Our latest blog post explores the prospects of a drug that is currently in human trials as a treatment for the glycogen storage disorder called Pompe disease. Pompe disease is a consequence of recessive mutations in GAA, a gene encoding the lysosomal enzyme that breaks down glycogen in muscle.

The drug is an inhibitor of glycogen synthase I (GYS1), the enzyme that is constitutively activated in PSSM1.

The blog post discusses the research on Pompe disease in humans and mice, and how this might eventually result in a drug to treat PSSM1.
