Oct 3-4 1993, Operation Gothic Serpent, AKA "Black Hawk Down" incident, or "Battle of Mogadishu".
Elements of 3rd BN 75th Rangers, C squadron SOFD-D "Delta Force", 160th SOAR, and various detachments conducted a raid to capture Mohammed Farrah Aidid, a warlord responsible for attacks on UN Aid personnel.
This particular incident produced a variety of critical tactical considerations after the fact that are still reinforced to this day such as:
- A highly skilled small force vs. a larger, unskilled force
- Pre-operational checks and SOPs
- Urban threat considerations
- Contingency planning
- Higher and Adjacent unit coordination
- Urban CAS and ISR
- TCCC and MEDEVAC procedures
- Body armor improvements and doctrine
It is infamous for the TV broadcast of dead American military personnel being paraded through the streets in the immediate hours following the conclusion of the main fighting. This shocked many at home, and was likely influential in the decision to pull troops from Somolia.
It produced numerous acts of valor, likely the most well known being the sacrifices of Gary Gordon and Randy Shugart, two Delta operators who attempted a 2 man rescue of the crew from the crashed MH-60 "Super Six Four". Having asked numerous times to be placed near the crash, they were finally given the go-ahead, being fully informed there was no way of knowing when help would come to retrieve them. They reached the crash, and after scavenging weapons and munitions from the helicopter, they fought desperately against overwhelming odds to protect the injured pilot. The 2 SF soldiers repelled swarms of attackers as they converged on the exposed position from all directions. Despite their bravery and skill, eventually they depleted their ammunition, and were both killed while defending the crash site.
Many have questioned the rationale for our involvement in various foreign affairs, and not all of those have easy or palatable answers. But remember that good men, will do good men things, where ever they are found. We should all seek to emulate such skill and bravery, and to be worthy of those we may call upon in the fights yet to be.
