We're already nostalgic about the summer now that it is September. This year's middle and high school summer campers have a good head start to fall classes after using geometry skills while mapping and critical thinking skills while understanding tricky stratigraphy. We wish them all the best in the new school year!

Happy First Day of School, Alexandria! Over 100 years ago in 1915 the city broke ground on the new Alexandria High School on the northwest corner of Cameron and West Streets. The school remained in use as a high school until 1935 when it became an annex to the Jefferson School and a new facility opened in Del Ray. The building was eventually torn down in the 1960s to make room for the new Jefferson-Houston Elementary. Archaeologists found this medallion at Fort Ward while conducting a metal detecting survey ahead of the construction of a new ADA pathway. This brass medallion is marked "AHS" and "1915" supporting the theory that it was some sort of token used to commemorate the dedication of Alexandria High School. How and why it made its way to Fort Ward is less clear because this artifact was found with little other contextual information that would help us link it to a person or household.

During these extra hot days of summer we are especially thankful to our General Services staff who help keep us cool. When our old HVAC system in our small curation space failed, they worked quickly to get us new systems before the peak of summer so that we can keep our collections in a stable environment.

Hello! My name is Kiran Pippin-Mathur, and I had the honor to be a returning summer intern with Alexandria Archaeology. As a recent graduate from James Madison University, this internship was the perfect bridge to beginning my postgraduate Masters this fall. I had the opportunity to work in the field, museum, lab, and collections. My favorite part of the internship was being entrusted to handle a variety of artifacts, old and new, and realizing the importance of education in preserving the past, present, and future through the stories we tell, and all the work that goes on behind the scenes to achieve this!

This summer we partnered with the American Anthropological Association's (AAA) Louise Lamphere Internship Program to provide a DC-area archaeology internship. A recent graduate of the University of South Florida, Lianna helped guide teenage campers through excavation at the Shuter's Hill site (44AX175), learned how to process artifacts in the lab, and cavity mounted objects for exhibit. According to Lianna, "it was very gratifying to listen to the kids comprehend all that they learned and tell the story of the Shuter's Hill site through the materials they excavated." Thanks for all of your hard work, Lianna!

A few weeks ago we had the pleasure of hosting a visiting researcher from Indiana University. Hayden is interested in understanding how and why various fish species changed over time in the Chesapeake region. He left with quite a few fish bones for his study and we are very excited to hear his results soon!

Alexandria is home to a few time capsules, including two with connections to the Torpedo Factory. Learn more about them at the Torpedo Factory Art Center's Second Friday from 7 - 10 p.m. on Friday, July 10. Alexandria Archaeology will be there alongside other free activities, live music, and art workshops celebrating America250.

An in-depth history of Alexandria's Market Square is now available online thanks to the research and work of Dr. Greg A. Beaman and a Commonwealth History Fund grant from the Virginia Museum of History and Culture. The Historic Alexandria report and StoryMaps tell the stories of enslaved and free Black people whose lives intersected with the square. Learn more at alexandriava.gov/go/7216.
