A tool can work exactly as intended: and still have more access than the task requires.
That’s the practical AI security question business owners should be asking.
In a recent client conversation, we discussed how an AI assistant’s connection to business systems should be reviewed based on what it actually needs to do: not simply what it can access.
Least privilege means giving a tool only the access necessary for its job. No more.
Before connecting an AI tool, ask:
1️⃣ What does it need to do?
2️⃣ What data does it need?
3️⃣ What can it change: read, edit, send, or delete?
4️⃣ Can the workflow be narrowed?
A narrower connection can still support productivity while reducing unnecessary exposure and unintended changes.
AI can be a valuable business assistant. The goal isn’t to avoid useful technology. It’s to use it thoughtfully.
