The House Committee on the Judiciary recently held a hearing examining the Southern Poverty Law Center’s (SPLC) role in fomenting division and hate in America. Once revered as a bulwark against extremism, the SPLC now faces sharp criticism for straying from its original mission.
Two things remain clear. First, the SPLC was founded with honorable intentions. Emerging from the civil rights struggles of the South, it sought to combat genuine racism, poverty, and injustice through legal advocacy and monitoring. Second, the organization has profoundly lost its way.
