Proposed changes to the System for Award Management (SAM), from the General Services Administration are being considered now that would require nonprofit applicants and other recipients of federal financial assistance to sign new certifications under penalty of criminal and civil law.

The proposed changes are vague and complex, making it nearly impossible for nonprofits to know whether they are in compliance. Nonprofits could be wrongfully accused of noncompliance and would have to spend an enormous amount of staff time and resources defending themselves in audits, investigations, and court.

The public comment period is open through March 30. Sign onto a national letter opposing the proposed changes. This is not good policy for the nonprofit sector or the communities they serve.

The National Council of Nonprofits and Legal Defense Fund invite organizations nationwide to sign onto a national letter opposing proposed changes to federal grantees that would harm nonprofits and communities.

The board of the Piatt County Nursing Home Foundation gathered this past Saturday for a day-long training to learn from the GOAT, Laura Huth-Rhoades how to build deeper impact for their community outreach and fundraising efforts. And oh boy was it ever time well spent!

In just one day, the nonprofit has seen followers on Facebook soar by 2,620% with 136 new followers. Views are up by over 500% and engagement by a whopping 2,557%. Social media was but one area of focus for the training -- the group also learned a host of other great tactics for raising awareness, all focused on raising more money to support the residents living in the Piatt County Nursing Home and Maple Point - An Affordable Assisted Living Community centers they support.

"I really feel empowered and ready to go," said one board member after the training. "I saw today that I can make a difference and that together we can really get great things done for the Foundation. I'm excited!"

Action Alert! This week, the US House of Representatives is expected to once again consider the” Stop Terror-Financing & Tax Penalties on American Hostages Act” (HR 9495), which targets relief for hostages of terrorists while ostensibly strengthening tools to curb terrorism financing.

Sounds like a nice idea, right? Hold the phone. In reality, HR 9495 would give the US Treasury Secretary nearly unfettered power to revoke the tax-exempt status of charitable nonprofits. Yep.

A section of the legislation would allow the government to designate ANY nonprofit as a "terrorist supporting organization", then require that organization to prove itself innocent. You read that right.

There are already mechanisms to prevent nonprofits from funding terrorism and this bill would duplicate them in a manner that is certainly subject to abuse. Please use this Independent Sector tool to call your legislators today and urge them to vote no on HR 9495.

Protect the rights of nonprofits, guard against executive overreach

Proud of our Chief ChangeMaker Laura Huth-Rhoades's role in the narrative grantwriting for this important Volo Internet + Tech project to bring high-speed fiber internet to residents, farmers, and businesses across rural Champaign County Illinois. She doesn't write grants often, but when she does, she nails it, helping to leverage $13M in funds to transform the way that rural residents can live, farm, and do business.

Said Illinois Department of Commerce & Economic Opportunity Office of Broadband officials of the grant: "This is the best grant narrative I believe we have ever seen." A real quote.

“The need is really bigger than I think what folks would expect,” Edenburn said. “The digital divide is real.”

Oh, how often we've seen this! A real dream, rooted in passion and cause -- to launch your own nonprofit. It'll be easy, they said. It'll be fun, they said.

Not so fast, we said, including our colleague Kim at Athena Coaching & Consulting. There's a lot to consider before heading down the founder's path. If you're thinking about starting a nonprofit, Kim's advice here is spot on and a must-read.

Here’s my dirty little secret. When people tell me they are thinking of starting a nonprofit, I usually try to talk them out of it.
