π¨ THE ATF JUST CHANGED THE GAME ON SUPPRESSORS & SBRs π¨
As of today (Oct. 9), the ATF says it will no longer enforce NFA approval and registration requirements for:
β
Suppressors
β
Short-barreled ri**es
β
Short-barreled sh****ns
β
AOWs ("any other weapons")
Federally, that means no Form 4, no tax stamp, no waiting on approval. Dealers run a 4473 and a background check, same as any other gun.
What did NOT change:
β Machine guns and destructive devices. Still full NFA.
β State law. This is the big one for us.
MICHIGAN FOLKS, READ THIS PART π
Michigan law still ties suppressors and short barrels to federal registration. The ATF's own guidance says it can't tell you whether an unregistered item counts as legal under state law, and it tells everyone to check with state authorities.
Until Michigan gives a clear answer, our advice is simple: stick with the Form 4. It's $0, the ATF is still accepting them, and recent eForm approvals have been running days, not months.
One more thing. The ATF says this is an enforcement policy, not a repeal. It can be reversed, and there's no guaranteed way to register an item later. Registered is the safe play.
Is this a huge win? Absolutely. Is it the Wild West? Not in Michigan. Not yet.
