You probably don't need to tear everything apart…

—————

“One misconception I run into is that people assume fixing an acoustic problem means construction. They start thinking about adding walls, changing ceilings, moving offices, all of that.

Sometimes those things have their place. But with sound masking, we can often work with the office you've already got. Give us the floorplan, tell us how you're using the space, and there's a lot we can figure out before anybody starts tearing into anything."

Should privacy and focus depend on where you sit? 🤔

In many offices, employees with doors have a very different acoustic experience than those working in open areas. Conversations carry, focus gets interrupted, and private discussions can feel anything but private.

That’s where **acoustic equity** comes in.

Acoustic equity gives employees better access to privacy and focus wherever they work. Learn how thoughtful office acoustics can create a better workplace for everyone.

Does sound masking go in conference rooms?

Sometimes. For ensuring privacy for the conversations that take place inside conference rooms, sound masking emitters are installed outside of conference rooms to prevent people in the hallway or adjoining rooms from overhearing potentially confidential conversations.

If you don’t want to be distracted by outside noises during a meeting, then we recommend treating inside conference rooms as well.

The open office isn’t the problem. Uncontrolled sound is.

Open workplaces can support collaboration and flexibility, but when every conversation travels across the floor, focus and privacy quickly suffer.

Better open office acoustics can help workplaces balance collaboration, privacy, and focus without abandoning the flexibility of open design.

Research from , conducted with the of Wisconsin–Madison, found that providing employees with greater privacy and shielding in open environments significantly improved their ability to sustain attention and stay focused.

The takeaway isn't that open offices are the problem. It's that successful workplaces intentionally balance collaboration with spaces that support concentration.

Turns out, finding the privacy you need at work doesn’t necessarily require closing a door. A new Steelcase study proves that when an open plan office is designed with pockets of visual privacy, it really is possible to focus and get things done. But don’t close your eyes to this additional find...

Well shoot, I already built an open office…

—————

“I get calls from people all the time who think their open office is just too loud. But a lot of times, loud really isn’t the problem.

The problem is that you can understand everything everybody is saying.

You don’t have to make the office silent. You just need conversations to start fading into the background sooner. Then you can still have the energy and collaboration of an open office without hearing somebody’s conversation from 50 feet away.
