Sempere Lab

Sempere Lab Our lab focuses on the role of microRNAs in initiation and progression of breast and pancreatic cancers. We study preclinical models and clinical samples.

The Sempere Laboratory at Van Andel Research Institute uses a multidisciplinary approach to understand the role of microRNAs in tumor initiation and growth, with a focus on breast and pancreatic cancer. Along with molecular biology techniques, Dr. Lorenzo Sempere and his team are developing new preclinical models and utilize innovative human tissue-based multiplex ISH/IHC assays to develop microRN

A biomarkers. In cancer diagnosis, increasing the available markers can lead to earlier and more accurate diagnosis, which can guide doctors in prescribing more personalized treatments.

Last week, Dr. Sempere presented "Intraductal approaches for breast cancer prevention and treatment" at VARI's Research in Progress seminar series. His talk highlighted recent results from a translational project in the lab for an audience of fellow VARI scientists and students. This project is supported by a VAI Employee Impact Campaign and a VARI Faculty Innovation awards. This is a collaborative project with the participation of local clinicians and MSU faculty.”

The Sempere Lab welcomed Josh Schipper earlier this summer. Josh is a West Michigan native who has recently returned with his family to the snowy north from warmer climates. He graduated from Grand Valley State University, and went on to obtain his PhD in biochemistry from North Carolina State University and was a postdoc at Duke University. His research has focused on drug design and studying the structure/function relationship of caspases in relation to cell death, and understanding how complex transcription factor binding preferences play a role in gene regulation for the E2F family of cell cycle regulators and other transcription factors.

Joyce Goodluck is a rising senior at Michigan State University and majoring in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. Joyce is from Rwanda, a country of a thousand hills and her home country is considered the cleanest country in Africa. On May 22, she joined the Sempere Lab as a VAI 2017 Meijer Summer Intern. While in our lab, she will explore her interest in cancer research. Joyce hopes to continue doing cancer research as part of her graduate school education and eventually as part of her career.

Members of the Sempere lab were delighted to meet with VARI Seminar Series Speaker, Dr. David Tuveson. Dr. Tuveson is a professor as well as The Cancer Center Director and The Director of the Cancer Therapeutics Initiative at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Dr. Tuveson is an internationally renowned physician-scientist in pancreatic cancer research who pioneered genetically-engineered K-Ras models of pancreatic cancer. It was great to discuss with Dr. Tuveson our miR-21 project funded by Phi Beta Psi Sorority.

On Thursday, April 20 – DaShaun Ragland and lab members were treated to lunch in celebration of DaShaun’s final day as “student intern” in the Sempere lab. DaShaun is completing his junior year at Grand Valley State University this month where he double majors in Premedical Preparation-Biomedical Science and Spanish. He is heading to Chile (May 2017), where he will study abroad for 9 weeks (honing his Spanish and exploring the region and the culture). We wish him much success during his adventures. Welcome Sudakshina Chakrabarty!

Sudakshina is going into her final semester at Grand Valley State University, where she will receive her master’s degree of Cell and Molecular Biology in Spring 2017.

She previously obtained a Master’s degree in Biotechnology from Presidency University, India. Her previous research experience included studying arsenic resistant bacterial profile.

She is determined to pursue a career in cancer research and she is looking forward to expanding her research skills and knowledge as a Research Intern in the Sempere lab studying microRNA activity in pancreatic and breast cancer models.

We are pleased to welcome Sudakshina as a valued member in the Sempere Lab.
